• First black to graduate with a degree from Harvard

Booker T. Washington

• Born in 1856
• Son of a slave
• Ran a successful black school in Tuskegee,
  Alabama
• Believed Blacks should be trained for trades
  before fighting rights and equality

• Education was seen as the way forward
• Du Bois disagreed

• Believed Black Americans should return to Africa
• Universal Negro Improvement Association(UNIA) set

• Black star line started up to transport Blacks
