  • Culture is everything that is learned and shared
    by members of a social group. This includes the
    values or ideas about what is important to the
    people in the group.

  • Ability to learn- enables to make choices.
  • Ability to communicate- language, flags and
    music.
  • Ability to shape the environment - Grasp and
    manipulate objects.

Cultural Relativism and Ethnocentrism
  • Cultural relativism is the belief that it is
    important to respect the diversity of cultures.
  • Ethnocentrism is the belief that ones culture is
    superior to others.

Cultural Components
  • Values - what is considered good or bad, right or
    wrong, desirable or undesirable.
  • Beliefs - acceptance of an idea situation.
  • Folkways - everyday manners.
  • Laws - rules enforced by government.
  • Norms - accepted ways of behaving.
  • Mores - strongly held norms.

Shaping Culture
  • Climate, resources, and geography limit or
    provide opportunities for food, clothing and
    physical well being.
  • Isolation or integration can help or hinder
    acquiring from other countries.
  • Discoveries and inventions can provide
    advantages.
  • Cultural goals and values can direct efforts and
    shape cultural institutions.

Multiculturalism
  • Practice of maintaining the unique
    characteristics of each cultural group in a
    society that includes one or more different
    cultures.
  • New ideas and art forms are among the benefits of
    a multicultural society. Being exposed to
    different cultures can enrich the lives of
    individuals and benefit society as a whole.

Subcultures
  • Subcultures are a group of people that share
    certain values and beliefs with the larger
    culture, but has characteristics that members
    share only with each other.
  • Ethnic groups that follow traditional ways and
    separate themselves from the rest of society are
    called subcultures.
