  • Verbal / Linguistic - Explanation and
    understanding through the use of words.
  • Visual / Spatial Explanation and comprehension
    through the use of pictures, maps, graphs etc

    etc

  • Flashcards and pictures
  • Have them with you at all times. Use
    different techniques to present the vocabulary
    roll the card over in many directions, show for a
    second and hide again, let them slowly appear
    from the back of the book etc.
  • Realia
  • Use them whenever possible. Let kids bring
    objects of their own to allow personalization.
    Invite people to your classroom.
  • Miming
  • Try to create a single movement for the new
    words presented. Make noises related to the
    vocabulary taught.

  • Pronunciation
  • Pronounce the words in many original ways.
    Drill as a whole class, individually and in
    groups. Wave your hands to indicate stress and
    intonation, use your fingers to show the number
    of syllables, try backchaining.
  • Cross Curricular Learning
  • Find out what the students learn during
    other classes and try to incorporate that into
    yours.
  • Context
  • Make use of the blackboard, the furniture
    and dress up. Use sound recordings or watch a
    thematically related video. Elicit.

  • Use mascots or puppets. Give them a name and
    age and use throughout the whole school year.
  • Phrases and the usage of TL
  • Whenever an opportunity comes up teach your
    kids everyday phrases. Emphasize the activity and
    repeat at all times. Always encourage the usage
    of TL.
  • Words written down
  • Always model and drill pronunciation before
    writing anything on the board.
  • Time and Timing
  • Keep it short and use your time effectively.

  • Teamwork, games and the sense od competitiveness
  • Try to turn all the activities into some
    sort of a game or a competition. Make rules and
    give rewards. Check your instructions.
  • Demonstration not explanation
  • YL wont understand wordy explanations. Thus
    focus on demonstrations or ask a stronger student
    for help.
  • Rules and routine
  • Create a set of rules for your class to
    follow and be strict about them.
  • Getting the students attention
  • Use sound making objects whistles,
    rattles, toy guns...

  • Praise and rewards
  • Praise all the time for the smallest things
    they do. Use verbal praise or stamps, draw suns,
    give stickers. Never stoop to bribery.
  • Teachers position in the classroom
  • Walk around to maintain students interest.
  • Fast Finishers
  • Always have something prepared for them as
    if they have nothing to do, your lesson can
    easily get spoilt.
  • Problematic students
  • Praise them for any positive thing they do
    and make them your elves.
  • Positive attitude
  • Smile, hug and love your students and they
    will love you in reaturn ?
