  • List 5 situations that you think cause teens to
feel stressed. Next to each item, write down why
you think that particular situation is a source
    of stress for teens.

2
STRESS!?!?!?!
  • Lesson 5

3
Objectives
  • Examine the causes and effects of stress
  • Analyze how stress can affect physical,
    mental/emotional and social health

4
Key Terms
  • Stress the reaction of the body and mind to
    everyday challenges and demands
  • Perception the act of becoming aware through the
    senses
  • Greatly affects stress levels

5
Causes
  • Stressor ANYTHING that causes stress
  • People, objects, places, events, situations
  • Some stressors affect almost everyone in the same
way (siren heightened alertness) while others
affect people in very different ways
    (transferring schools anxiety or excitement)

6
5 Categories
  • Biological Stressors
  • Illnesses, disabilities, injuries
  • Environmental Stressors
  • Poverty, pollution, crowding, noise, natural
    disasters
  • Cognitive (Thinking) Stressors
  • Perception of a situation
  • Personal Behavior Stressors
  • Negative reactions in the body and mind caused by
tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs or by a lack of
    physical activity
  • Life Situation Stressors
  • Death of a pet, divorce of parents, trouble in
    relationships

7
Stress Response
  • 2 major systems are active during the bodys
    response to stressors
  • Nervous System
  • Endocrine System
  • 3 Stages of the Stress Response Just remember
    ARF! Alarm, Resistance, Fatigue

8
A- Alarm
  • First stage
  • Body and mind go on high alert
  • fight or flight response
  • Figure 8.1 page 200

9
R- Resistance
  • 2nd stage
  • Body adapts to the rush created by the alarm
    and reacts to the stressor
  • When you actually fight or take flight
  • Fight ability to resist a physical challenge or
attack can be enhanced (such as a person being
able to lift an automobile to save a friend)
  • Flight maybe be able to run faster or farther
    and you normally could

10
F- Fatigue
  • Prolonged exposure to stress will result in
    fatigue
  • 3rd stage
  • Tired feeling takes over, lowering your level of
    activity
  • Physical fatigue
  • muscles work vigorously over long periods of
time, often leading to soreness and pain
  • impaired reaction time
  • Muscles tire quickly
  • Psychological fatigue
  • Result from constant worry, overwork, depression,
    boredom, isolation or feeling overwhelmed
  • Combination of the above factors
  • Pathological fatigue
  • Tiredness brought on by overworking the bodys
    defenses
  • Anemia, the flu, being overweight, poor nutrition
can all bring on pathological fatigue
  • Drugs and alcohol can intensify the feeling

11
Physical Effects of Stress
  • Psychosomatic response a physical reaction that
results from stress rather than from an injury or
illness (psycho meaning of the mind and somatic
    meaning of the body)
  • Sleep disorders, skin disorders, stomach and
    digestive problems

12
Physical Effects Continued
  • Headache
  • Stress headache is the most common type of
    headache
  • In a year 70 of people worldwide will have at
    least one stress headache
  • Headaches related to tensions When stressed the
muscles in head and neck contract

13
Physical Effects Continued
  • Asthma
  • For some stress can trigger an asthma attack (in
    a person with asthma)
  • If you have asthma its very important to
discover what sets your attacks off and learn how
to manage or avoid those triggers

14
Physical Effects Continued
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Result of prolonged stress
  • Increase in cholesterol levels from prolonged
    stress block arteries
  • Contributing factor to heart disease and stroke
  • Also common among overweight individuals, so
being overweight and stressed would be a
    cumulative risk for heart disease

15
Physical Effects Continued
  • Weakened Immune System
  • Prolonged stress reduces the bodys ability to
    fight diseases
  • Weakened immune system makes your body more prone
to diseases and infections, which can then stress
    your body even more

16
Mental/ Emotional and Social Effects
  • Interference with daily activities
  • Interference with relationships

17
Mental/ Emotional and Social Effects Continued
  • Difficulty Concentrating
  • Hard to focus because of circumstances
  • Could lead to negative self talk
  • Distorted belief that failure is inevitable
  • Mood Swings
  • Common reaction
  • Teens may experience as a result of hormonal
    changes during adolescence
  • Strain on relationships
  • Risks of Substance Abuse
  • Stress increases a persons vulnerability to drug
    use
  • Many people give stress as a reason that they
    started smoking or drinking
  • Actually increases stress and leads to even
    bigger problems

18
Take Control!
  • Chronic Stress stress associated with long term
problems that are beyond a persons control
  • Less intense symptoms than the fight or flight
response but they will last longer
  • Upset stomach, headache, insomnia, change in
    appetite, feeling anxious
  • Strategies to TAKE CONTROL
  • Physical activity- improves bodys health,
releases pent up tension, affects brain chemistry
    helping to calm you down
  • Support among friends and family- talk about how
    you feel
  • Partake in a hobby or activity that relaxes you
  • AVOID the use of tobacco, alcohol or other drugs-
these can lead to addiction and even bigger
    problems
