3Aging Population Challenges
- People 65 older were never more than 3 of
global population until the 1900s. - Today in developed world they amount to 15.
- In 2030 they will represent 25 of global
population. - Causes
- Falling fertility rates (fewer births per woman)
- Rising longevity (longer lives)

5Aging Population Challenges
- Fertility rate has fallen from 5.0 to 2.7 births
per woman since the mid-1960s. - In developed countries, it is has fallen to
1.5far beneath the replacement rate needed to
maintain a stable population over time. - Global life expectancy has risen from age 45 to
around age 65, and in developed countries, it has
risen to between age 75 and 80. - This represents a greater gain over the past 50
years than over the previous 5,000.

Studies
6Aging Population Challenges
- Fiscal burden
- health care benefits moving toward 12 of GDP in
developed nations - Human resource shortage
- fewer replacement workers
- fewer health care workers
- tighter immigration policies
- Family Challenges
- fewer children to care for aging parents
- families geographically separated
7Future Scenario
- In the US alone -
- Eldercare needs will surpass childcare needs.
- One in three households will have a family member
with cognitive decline. - There will be 400,000 fewer nurses to provide
care. - A healthcare system on the verge of collapse
under the weight of its most needy beneficiaries.
