Risk Assessments
  • Hazard
  • something with the potential to cause harm
  • Risk
  • the likelihood and the consequences of that
    hazard happening

Risk Assessments Crossing the road
A moving car is a hazard. The consequence is
that it could kill you. 1. The risk is very
high if you stand in the middle of a motorway and
the car is travelling at 70 mph.

Risk Assessments Crossing the road
A moving car is a hazard. The consequence is
that it could kill you. 2. The risk is low if
you are on the pavement of a quiet cul-de-sac and
the car is moving very slowly.

street the risk is high if the car is travelling
over the speed limit and you cross the road
without looking.

Risk Assessments Crossing the road
A moving car is a hazard. The consequence is
that it could kill you. 4. The risk is medium
if the driver is observing the speed limit and
you run across its path estimating a safe gap.

A moving car is a hazard. The consequence is
that it could kill you. 5. The risk is low if
the car is travelling slowly and you cross well
before it using a pedestrian crossing.

Risk Assessments
The standard way for creating a risk assessment
in GlaxoSmithKline is to break down any
experiment or activity into its parts and
identify the hazards associated with each. The
standard GlaxoSmithKline template for Risk
Assessments can be downloaded from the web site
www.AtWorkWithScience.com. As an example, think
about boiling an egg for breakfast. The
component parts include Select the egg Boil the
egg in water for 4 minutes Remove the egg from
the water Cut the top off the egg
Two of these could lead to death !

Write a risk assessment for the synthesis and
isolation of the fertiliser ammonium sulphate by
neutralising sulphuric acid with ammonia using
the following procedure. Measure out sulphuric
acid (50ml) into a flask. Use methyl orange
indicator and titrate with aqueous ammonia
solution from a burette. Repeat the process
without the indicator using the same volumes from
the trial run. Boil or evaporate off the water
to give a solid product. You will need to look
at hazard data from CLEAPSS (CD-ROM or on a
school network) or a chemical suppliers
catalogue.

The safety of a workplace is increased by the
presence of safety signs. There are standards
for sign design so that everyone recognises them
easily.
