Title: OUR PLANET EARTH IS WARMING

1
OUR PLANET EARTH IS WARMING!
  • WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?
  • WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT NOW?

2
  • Solar radiation strikes the Earth in short
    wavelengths light waves.
  • Light waves are absorbed by the Earths surface
and energy is converted to heat.
  • About 30 of incoming solar energy absorbed is
    reflected back to space.

3
  • The surface of the Earth absorbs energy from
solar radiation in short wavelengths and
reradiates part of it at longer wavelengths.

4
  • Albedo is the percentage of solar radiation
    reflected (reflexivity) by matter
  • fresh snow reflects 85-95 of solar radiation
  • Dry sand reflects 35-40
  • Forest reflects about 13
  • Earths albedo is about 30

5
  • Atmospheric gases called greenhouse gases absorb
and reemit much of this long wavelengths
    radiation back to Earth.
  • About half of the total solar energy absorbed at
the surface evaporates water adding to the
    greenhouse gases.

6
  • Human activities also generate greenhouse gases
that add to the naturally processed ones and
contribute to greater long wavelengths radiation
    warming the Earths surface.

7
We Can reduce Global Warming!
  • Continuous Global Warming can finally lead to the
end of all forms of life on Earth.
  • We can reduce the impact of Global Warming by
reducing the levels of emissions of greenhouse
    gases caused by humans.

8
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most important
greenhouse gas.
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most important
greenhouse gas caused by human activities.
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) enters the atmosphere
through the burning of fossil fuels (oil, natural
gas, and coal), waste, trees and wood products
and as a result of other chemicals.

9
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most important
greenhouse gas.
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) is emitted from cars,
trucks, buses, power plants, from airplanes, and
from buildings, and in the manufacture of cement.
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions count for about
55 of total Global Greenhouse Gases (GHG)
    emissions.

10
Methane(CH4) is the second most important
greenhouse gas.
  • Methane(CH4) is emitted from the production and
transport of fossil fuels. It is also emitted by
livestock and as a result of agricultural
activities (rice paddies), and by the decay of
    organic waste in municipal landfills.
  • Methane(CH4) emissions count for about 16 of
    total global GHG emissions

11
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is also an important GHG.
  • Nitrous oxide (N2O) is emitted during
    agricultural and industrial activities. Sources
are from nylon and nitric acid production and in
    the use of fertilizers.
  • Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions count for about 9
    of total global GHG emissions.

12
Fluorinated gases are the least important GHG
  • Fluorinated gases referred to as hydro
fluorocarbons are synthetic gases (CFCs) produced
from various industrial processes. These gases
    are produced in small quantities.
  • Fluorinated gases emissions count for about 1 of
    total global GHG emissions.

13
Deforestation
  • Deforestation is another important cause of
Global Warming responsible for about 20 to
carbon emissions into the atmosphere by the
cutting and burning of millions of trees every
    year across the world.

Stop global Warming Now!
  • How can we contribute to reduce the impact of
    Global Warming?
