IV. Developing Coaching Skills and a Coaching
Environment
Lets talk about each deliverable
  • Leaders begin to truly stand for the success of
the people they coach. Each person coaches 2 to 3
    direct reports.
  • People offer to act as coaches/ mentors in
    shaping others leadership and business
    challenges and in taking action.
  • They act as thinking partners in solving real
    business problemslistening, questioning
    assumptions, and making suggestions.
  • They also use coaching to anticipate breakdowns,
provide whats missing, and prevent costly
    failures.
  • The program transforms coaching from an isolated
event (once or twice a year) to a monthly/ daily
    activity.
  • Coaching becomes the core of how people do
business with their colleagues and direct reports.

9
The Structure of Action Coaching
  • The masterful coach meets with the team once a
month on their leadership and business
    challenges.
  • In between group sessions, the coach has a 90
minute phone call with each individual.
  • The team leader is on every other call which
    builds their coaching skills.
  • Each person in the program coaches 2 to 3 direct
reports, thus creating a coaching environment.

The combination of a masterful coach and the
masterful program structure produces leadership
and business breakthroughs. Gary Peck, CEO, S
Group
10
Examples of How Different Leaders Used Coaching
  • Action Coaching was used mainly to get a
breakthrough business result for a company and
for the team to become a high performance team in
    the process.
  • Where there where already breakthrough projects,
Action Coaching was used to create a breakthrough
in leadership and a legacy of outstanding
    organization capability.
  • Action Coaching was used to accomplish a 300
million cost savings project that represented a
shift in the way business was donea new level of
    coordination, alignment, communication,
    creativity, and leadership.

11
Examples Cont.
  • Action Coaching was used to speed up the next
generation of leaders, enhancing dramatically the
    organizational capability to face daunting
    mid-term and long-term challenges.
  • Action Coaching was used to break from four
consecutive years of mediocre or average
performance and from a mindset of incremental
    improvement and resignationto actually
delivering great business results and a climate
    of passion and possibility.

12
The Five Phases of the One-Year Action Coaching
Program
Action Coaching is Based on the Five Phases of
Breakthrough
  • Formulation
  • Each person creates significant leadership and
business challenges and a concrete plan using our
rigorous methodology which includes a clear and
    compelling commitment statement, specific and
    measurable conditions of satisfaction, an
    actionable structure for fulfillment, and
designated key 30-day actions. It is imperative
for this phase to be done extremely well and to
have the coach, business leader and participant
aligned and excited about the final product.
    (Months 1 and 2)
  • Concentration
  • This is the phase of getting the rocket off the
ground by getting into a high level of
activities and action. This is where you move
from planning to execution. If you are going to
have a breakthrough within a year, you must make
    significant measurable progress toward the
breakthrough goals within the first 4 months.
This includes quick successes, learning, driving
for progress. (Months 3 to 6)

13
Five Phases Cont.
  • Momentum
  • The idea is to create concentrated effort so that
after six months there is true momentum. This
means getting as many people involved as
    possible, building on successes, and
understanding key learnings so as to expand the
scope of the project. You see the finish line and
run toward it. At one point in this phase,
    victory becomes predictable. (Months 7-10)
  • Breakthrough
  • You need to lead and manage so that momentum
brings you over the finish line.At one point in
momentum, you know youve got it, but you have to
do certain things to bring the result over the
line. Dont take success for granted. (Month 10)
  • Sustainability
  • People ask What do I need to do to make this
breakthrough sustainable? What future is now
possible that I can stand for in the business and
in my leadership, given what we have just created
and where we are now? (Months 11,12)

14
Elements of the Group Sessions
  • Individuals get into the HOT Seat for real time
    coaching
  • The Action Coach and the business owner lead a
public conversation with each coachee intended to
make a difference in one of the four areas of
    Action Coaching.
  • This is done in a way in which all participants
contribute, as well as learn about coaching,
    leadership, and the business.
  • Teachable Point of View
  • The Action Coach brings to the group a TPOV
(powerful distinction) that has the power to
alter how people see things. These distinctions
have been chosen carefully for being highly
    impactful and actionable.
  • Peer Coaching
  • People engage in one-on-one coaching
conversations with their colleagues to support
    real time success, progress breakthrough
execution, while learning and developing coaching
    skills.
  • Debriefing
  • Distinguishing and reviewing as a group all
    lessons learned.

All elements are aimed at execution so people can
turn their commitments into success.
15
Elements of Individual Phone Sessions
  • We focus on insights, progress, breakdowns, and
next steps on leadership and business
breakthrough commitments and coaching of others.
  • We focus on key project commitments.
  • We deepen the understanding of the distinctions
learned in the group sessions and ensure the
powerful application in action of those
    distinctions.
  • We also bring additional distinctions that are
needed for a participant to break through or see
    openings for powerful action.

People see new openings for action, especially in
the areas where they were stuck or ineffective.
16
Examples of Teachable Points of View
  • Leadership arises in taking a stand that a
difference can be made vs. trying to look good.
  • Design an Impossible Future Vs. Predictable
    Future.
  • Be a game-changer who challenges the process
rather than a game- player who maintains the
    status quo.
  • Execute by linking the three core processes 1)
    People, 2) Strategy 3) operations.
  • Create an environment of breakthrough and
    accountability vs. reasons and excuses.
  • From win/lose and win/win, to transformational
    negotiation.
  • Spend time on what makes a difference vs. whats
    is important or the trivial.

17
Key Aspects of Action Coaching
  • Leadership
  • Achieve a quantum leap in your leadership ability
and in the way leaders think and interact
    together.
  • Possibility
  • Breakthrough commitments and a structure for
    fulfillment.
  • Execution
  • The ability to take a plan or blueprint and
    actually make something happen.
  • Delivery
  • People deliver measurable breakthrough results
over the course of a year that have a bottom-line
    impact.
