Introduction How does religion and government
exercise authority over people? For thousands of
years people have been ruled by one or the other.
From our Social Studies text we learned that in
12th Century Japan and China the groups that
ruled the people were the Samurai and the Khan
(or Mongols).

The Task
  • Your team will create a four part project
    including
  • MAPS
  •  BIOGRAPHIES
  • PICTORIALS/SCENES
  • ANSWERS TO KEY QUESTIONS
  • Final compilation will include all items applied
    to a tri fold board along with an oral
    presentation
  • Completing this project will allow you to answer
    the essential question
  • How does religion and government exercise
    authority over people?

THE PROCESS
  • Students work in teams of 4 to answer the key
    questions.
  • Groups of 4 will decide who will take which
    role biographer, cartographer, scenic artist,
    and political scientist. Students work
    individually in their roles
  • All team members will assume their role to work
    toward completion of their portion of the
    culminating presentation and written projects
  • All students will be able to answer the essential
    question
  • Each member of the team will place their final
    product on a tri-fold map, biography,
    pictorial/scenes, and hierarchy chart. (Teacher
    will describe process of obtaining a tri-fold)

  • ROLES
  • AS A TEAM answer the following questions
  • What does it mean to be a Samurai or a Khan?
  • How did these two groups keep their power and
    rule the masses?
  • As a Samurai or a Khan what were your
    responsibilities?
  • How did you relate to people?
  • How did you keep order among tribes or villages?
  • How often did you follow religious rituals?
  • Who was your superior?
  • Were you a soldier or a warrior?
  • Did you live in one place or travel the land?
  •          Biographer
  • Writes biographies of one Khan and one Samurai -
    1 paragraph on each. Composes a one page A Day
    In The Life Of. for a Samurai or a Khan.
    Assembles the groups vocabulary and fact sheets.
    Cartographers
  • Produces maps of 12th century Japan and China and
    a map of the 4 Khanates (kingdoms) and the 6
    Dynasties.
  •   Scenic Artists
  • Creates hand drawn pictorials and scenes (minimum
    of 3 each) from the daily life of a Samurai and a
    Khan. Must include a military and religious
    scene. Make a list and gather the materials you
    will need to turn one sketch into a three
    dimensional scene such as clay, plaster, paper
    mache', balsam wood, popsicle sticks, cardboard,
    fabric, plastic wrap, etc. A diorama is
    acceptable.

THE CONCLUSION
  Many countries in our present day world are
ruled by either religion (think the Middle East)
or by their government (think the U.S.). Since
9-11 we have become much more aware of the
existence and the power of these groups wield.
Be prepared to share your thoughts during our in
class discussion of the comparison between the
Samurai and the Khan and todays modern military
or terrorist organization.

  •  Students will be evaluated according to the
    following
  • Students will be able to answer the essential
    question for this lesson
  • In class on task behavior
  • Individual grade for each ROLE portion
  • Group grade for compilation and organization of
    tri fold board
  • Final assessment in form of an oral and visual
    presentation

Reduced Version
  • Due to time constraints the following are the
    REDUCED VERSION changes to the Japan/China
    Webquest
  • The presentation/construction of the project will
    not use a tri fold board. We will evaluate by
    oral presentation only.
  • Role changes
  • Biographer will write 1 full page (1.5 line
    spacing) on EITHER a famous Khan or Samurai
  • Cartographer will create ONE map on EITHER the
    Khanates OR the Dynasties
  • Political Scientist will choose EITHER the
    social hierarchy of 12th century Japan OR China
    to create their visual representation of that
    hierarchy. An explanation and picture examples
    of hierarchical level MUST be included in the
    representation.
  • Scenic Artist will draw 2 scenes for each
    Samurai and Khan OR 1 three dimensional scene of
    their choice Samurai or Khan in a military or
    religious setting.
