Welcome to Mass
On

Passion (PALM) SUNDAY (b)
in the year of Saint Paul
3
Today we begin with Jesus and his apostles
entering Jerusalem. It was a joyous day and the
people were calling hosanna and waving palm
branches as he passed by.
4
But, as our Liturgy of the Word unfolds, the mood
of the people (manipulated by the jealous high
priests and elders) changes to hatred enough for
them to demand his execution on a false charge of
blasphemy.
5
All four gospel writers wrote an account of the
Passion. We reserve Johns version to be read
every Good Friday and we cycle through the other
three on Palm Sunday. Matthew is read in Year A,
Mark in Year B and
Luke in Year C.
6
So, today, we will get the full story as we read
Marks account of the drama that unfolded on
those terrible days in the Holy City.
7
Mark begins his account with the chief priests
and scribes looking for some devious way to
arrest Jesus.
8
Meanwhile, Jesus is an hour away in Bethany,
having dinner with Simon the Leper when a woman
arrives and proceeds to anoint his head. This
causes some angst amongst those present.
9
In the next scene, Jesus and his Apostles are at
the Passover feast and he says he is about to be
betrayed.
10
.
Nevertheless he goes on to leave us the gift of
his Body and Blood as he institutes the Eucharist.
11
After dinner, the betrayal takes place and Jesus
is taken prisoner as he is praying in the Garden.
12
And he is taken to be questioned by Caiphas
the high priest and the scribes and
elders.
13
We will feel Peters shame as he denies Jesus.
14
And Pilates uncertainty as the crowd calls for a
crucifixion.
15
And Jesus hurt and humiliation as he is
terrorised.
16
And the pain that Jesus endured as he was scourged
17
And cruelly crowned with thorns
18
We will hear about the heavy cross that he carried
19
and the sign they placed over his head
20
The account will finish as he is laid to rest in
a grave belonging to his friend Joseph of
Arimathea.
