16
Introduction to PowerPoint Basics
  • Basic Guidelines

17
Screen Layout
  • Avoid using the bottom left portion of the screen
    for important information
  • Use graphics for instructional purposes, to
convey a message or concept, or to focus
    attention
  • Use single column format
  • Do not right justify

18
Fonts
  • Avoid using all capital letters, except for a
word or two of emphasis in short titles or
    buttons
  • Try not to use more than three types of fonts on
    one screen
  • Use serif fonts for body of text

19
Color
  • Avoid using red and green to differentiate
important points. Roughly 5 to 10 percent of the
    population is red/green deficient.
  • Use a maximum of four to six colors per screen.
  • Use color to link related information.

20
Color continued
  • Use brighter colors for the most important
    information.
  • Use commonplace color coding, such as red for
stop, green for go, and so forth.
  • Avoid combinations of complementary colors that
are the same value, such as blue/orange

on important points, control the flow of
information, and add interest to your
    presentation.
  • You can have each main bullet point appear
independently of others, or you can have objects
    appear progressively, one after another.
  • You can set up the way you want each bullet point
or object to appear on your slide.  A new feature
in PowerPoint 97 is the ability to animate
    elements of a graph.
