African Slavery

• The goal of the Europeans was finding cheap labor
• Millions of natives died from disease and others
  from the harsh work a new supply of labor was
  found in Africa
• Slavery lasted for about 300 years, ending as the
  different countries gained their freedom from
  Europe

• Brazil 4 - 10 million
• Spanish Empire 2 - 5 million
• Carribbean 3 6 million
• North America .5 1 million
• 10 to 20 million people enslaved

• Descendants of the African slaves are a part of
  the Latin American culture
• Most live in areas where plantation farming was
  important
• People with only African ancestors or people with
  both African and European ancestors (mulattoes)
  live in large numbers in these countries
• They represent about 60 of Cubans and 50 of
  Brazilians
