Title: NCSU UACE Workshop on Management of Numerical Errors In Nuclear Systems Modeling

1
NCSU U-ACE Workshop onManagement of Numerical
Errors In Nuclear Systems Modeling
  • Hosted by
  • North Carolina State University
  • Academic Center of Excellence In Modeling And
    Simulation
  • September 13th - 14th, 2007

2
Premise and Challenge
  • Can modeling and simulation assist decision
    making process?
  • Reduce reliance on expensive experiment
  • Increase reliance on cheap computer power
  • Advancing predictive capabilities
  • High fidelity
  • Rigorous verification and validation

3
Gain
  • Advanced predictive capabilities will allow
evaluation of uncertainties of key performance
metrics and determine best ways to minimize
    them.
  • Sources of uncertainties include
  • Input data uncertainty 'Previous Workshop'
  • Numerical errors
  • Modeling errors

4
Purpose of Workshop
  • To overview and discuss potential of emerging
methodologies to quantify and control simulation
errors that originate from numerical methods
approximations, as applied to various stages of
    the nuclear fuel cycle.

5
Format of Workshop
  • A limited number of invited review presentations
will be made followed by group discussions of
latest methodologies to quantify and minimize
    numerical errors.

6
Discussion
  • Reliability of a posteriori error estimates can
we derive, and then afford, guaranteed error
    bounds for complex nonlinear time-dependent
    equations? What are acceptable efficiency
indices? What is an acceptable cost with respect
    to solution time
  • Are there common directions that laboratories
should follow in advancing error estimation?
  • What is the role of VV and UQ in efforts to
    advance error estimation techniques?
  • How do we account for errors due to geometry
    approximation?
  • I How do we efficiently select time steps to
    control time integration errors?
  • .
  • ..

7
Outcome of Workshop
  • Complete gap analysis indicating where needs for
    additional RD are required
  • Identify where ongoing RD outside nuclear power
    can contribute to addressing needs
  • Establish professional relationships between
    workshop participants leading to future
    collaborative activities

8
Logistics
  • All meetings in room 1112 and dinner in rooms 7A
    and 7B
  • Bathrooms are located XXX
  • Transportation from/to hotel and McKimmon center
    as needed
  • Wireless connection is available in the building

9
Acknowledgements
  • INL for financial support
  • Mike Pernice of INL for plenary discussions about
the workshop focus areas and suggestions of
    potential participants
  • Ms. Hermine Kabbendjian for arranging workshop
    logistics
