Craig Reynolds Flocking Rules
Abstract
  • Separation accelerating away from neighbors
  • Alignment adjusting velocity to the average
    velocity of its neighbors
  • Cohesion moving towards the center of mass of
    the flock
  • The following modifications to Reynolds flocking
    algorithm create herd behavior
  • We use a 2D flocking algorithm mapped into 3D
    space
  • At each time-step, position is updated using
    projected velocity
  • We add an additional rule acceleration by

Additional accelerationrule a force causes the
animals to followterrain lines.
Energy Expenditure Function More energy is
expended traveling up or downsteep slopes.
Parameter K is adjustedto minimize energy
expenditure
2D velocity is rotated into the third dimension
and projected back onto the plane.
Future work
  • High-level behaviors migrating, finding food,
    water avoiding predators
