Department Hazardous Waste Accumulation
Requirements
  • Containers MUST be closed except when adding or
removing waste. Quench all reactions before
adding waste to hazardous waste collection
    containers.
  • Lids must be tight with no waste residue on the
outside of the container. All waste containers
should be placed within secondary containment.
Waste funnels on collection bottles MUST be kept
closed and latched when not adding waste to the
    container.
  • All containers must be labeled with the words
Hazardous Waste or other content identifier
when the container is used to accumulate wastes
from your work area. In addition, an inventory
sheet must be used to annotate waste constituents
    for record-keeping purposes. Ensure information
from hazardous waste container corresponds to
list of hazardous waste on inventory sheet.
Waste with a Biohazard constituent is to be kept
    separate from hazardous wastes.
  • The collection container must be compatible
with the waste and must not contain residues of
    incompatible materials. Only compatible wastes
may be accumulated in the same container.
  • Contact the Chemistry Stockroom or Laboratory
Manager when a waste pickup is needed from the
accumulation area. You may transport the waste
to the stockroom if you have current hazardous
    waste training.
