Motives why study?
  • When conditions in a sector are changing rapidly
    it creates more drive to aqquire education (Mike
    Rigby 2002 Spanish trade unions and the provision
    of continuous training Partnership at a distance
  • Education as a means to improve the bargaining
    position. Three main options?
  • Through collective agreements
  • Through personal salary increases/personal
    promotion
  • By having more valuable skills to sell/be able to
    master more complex and better paid jobs e.g.
    through increased education and training

Conclusion
  • When it comes to education ...
  • Unions have obligations towards members
  • And numerous opportunities to take active part in
    shaping a brighter future for their members and
    the community
  • Members with little formal education are less
    defensive to signals from the unions
  • So why shouldnt the unions meet expectations and
    get on with it?
