1
(Rowe, William, and Vivian Schelling. Memory and
Modernity. Popular Culture in Latin America.
London/New York Verso, 1991 229-30).
  • There is a need to distinguish the processes of
popular memory from official, state and
    ruling-class forms of memory Official
historiography creates heroes who represent the
nation, and this began with the heroes of
Independence Popular versions of these selfsame
heroes are often very different, as happens with
the figure of Simón Bolívar, conserved in the
oral traditions of the rural black population of
Venezuela. This Bolívar had a black mother, and
is protected by magical powers. The differences
here have to do both with the mode of storage of
memory (oral narratives) and with the popular
imaginary as matrix of beliefs and images.
