THE REVOLUTION OF MIXED REALITY AND SPA- TIAL
COMPUTING IN GAMES
Tcombination is changing the way we
a space base, and a backyard can become a
medieval battlefield. This ability to customize
the gaming environment not only increases
immersion but also encourages social
interaction, as players can share these
experiences with friends and family in the same
physical space. New challenges for game
developers Developers are challenged to create
experiences that are adaptable to a variety of
environments, thus ensuring that each gameplay
is unique. At the same time, these games must be
designed to be intuitive and accessible,
allowing players of all ages and abilities to
have fun. Integrating Artificial Intelligence
into games
he gaming industry is constantly
evolving, and one of the most exciting
innovations of recent times is Mixed
Reality (MR)/Spatial Computing,
with passthrough technology. This
play, bringing 3D elements into our real world
like
never before.
What is Mixed Reality/Spatial Computing?
Although companies and professionals segment the
concepts, both share the same goal, which is to
show players the real environment around them
by inserting virtual elements into it and thus
conveying the idea of sharing the same space.
Imagine playing a game where dragons fly through
your backyard, or solving puzzles that seem to
be on your living room table? This is a blend of
the real with the virtual, thus creating
limitless possibilities.
NPCs that learn and evolve The integration of
Artificial Intelligence with Mixed Reality is
opening doors to unprecedented customization in
the world of gaming. AI can generate endless
variations of dialogues and objectives, making
each interaction with NPCs (non-playable
characters) unique. This means that an NPC can
react differently to each player, adapting to
their playing style and choices made during the
game. With AI, NPCs can learn from player
interactions and evolve over time. For example,
an NPC can remember past actions of the player,
and mention them in future conversations or
adapt its combat strategy based on the players
tactics. This creates a more dynamic and
immersive gaming experience, where players feel
that their actions have a real impact on the
game world.
What is Passthrough? This technology operates by
using the front cameras of headsets, which
capture the environment and replicate the
captured image onto the screen inside the
headset. This allows users to see through the
screens and obtain a view of the physical
environment around them while using the
immersive device. The cameras and sensors
visually capture and record the external
environment, providing the image in real time
with software assistance to correct perspective,
reducing disorientation, and filling in blind
spots of the camera.
Safe and social games in personalized spaces
Mixed Reality (MR) and Spatial Computing are
redefining the concept of safe and social gaming
by allowing common spaces to be transformed into
personalized gaming environments. This
innovation enables players to interact with the
virtual world while remaining anchored to the
real world, ensuring a safe and engaging gaming
experience. Through passthrough, players can see
and interact with the physical environment
around them, reducing the risk of accidents and
enabling greater spatial awareness. This is
especially important in games that require
physical movement, where players need to navigate
both the virtual and real space. In addition to
safety, MR promotes socialization by
transforming real spaces into gaming scenarios.
A living room can become an enchanted castle, an
office can turn into
Gameplay that adapts and surprises With the use
of AI, it is also possible to create procedural
scenarios that adapt not only to the player but
also to the physical environment in which they
are located. This can result in missions that
change depending on where the player is in the
real world, or in stories that unfold in
different ways based on the players interaction
with the environment.
Conclusion looking to the future Mixed Reality
(MR) and Spatial Computing are paving new paths
for the gaming industry, transcending the simple
screen, and becoming an intrinsic part of our
daily lives. This technological revolution not
only provides us with more immersive games but
has also redefined how we interact with digital
entertainment, making it more social and
personalized. Furthermore,
-May 2024 - 7

the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
amplifies this experience, enabling unique
interactions with non-playable characters (NPCs)
and scenarios that dynamically adapt to the
players physical environment. We are witnessing
only the beginning of this transformation, and
the opportunities that lie ahead are as vast as
our imagination. This is an exciting moment in
gaming history, where the fusion of reality and
virtuality is redefining not only how we play
but also how we connect and explore worlds
beyond our reality.

DISTRICT SIX MUSEUM FORGES HISTORIC PARTNERSHIP
WITH LOUD RABBITS AGENCY AND ACADEMY OF DIGITAL
ARTS GAME ALUM FOR NEW VR EXHIBIT EXPERIENCE The
District Six Experience A Walk Through Time
A VR experience brought to you by the District
Six Museum, The Academy of Digital Arts and Loud
Rabbits. Loud Rabbits Agency and the Friends of
Design - Academy of Digital Arts Game Course
Alum, in partnership and close collaboration
with District Six Museum, is set to unveil a
groundbreaking virtual reality (VR) experience
in 2024, commemorating the museums 30th
anniversary. The virtual experience invites users
to immerse themselves in and experience parts of
District Six. Its purpose is to express South
African history and connect to legacy through a
new lens using cutting-edge game technology. The
Loud Rabbits and The Academy of Digital Arts
Game Course Alum began working on this project in
February and have collaborated closely with the
District Six Museum. Critical stakeholders to
this collaboration include former residents of
District Six. Driven by the newly-appointed
director Zeenat Patel- Kaskar, all archival
media is generously provided by the archival
team whose expertise allows meticulous attention
to detail that ensures an authentic and
respectful portrayal of District Sixs history
and legacy. She explains Crucial to the work
that we do in curating memories of the past, is
the need to respond to a world that is fast
replacing tangible experiences with virtual
ones. With the potential to present some
challenges for an institution such as ourselves,
we embrace the onset of virtual reality through
the District Six Museums position as an
evolving institution that emphasises
progress. Any innovation must be produced
sensitively, which we believe we have achieved
after receiving the endorsement from our cohort
of former District Six residents. We now have a
contemporary immersive opportunity that invites
people to experience parts of District Six. Our
preservation of District Six memory can exist
digitally too and we hope to attract the youth
whose tech savviness will find enjoyment
here. Says sound archivist Dean Jates My

student projects - this collaboration
underscores The Academy of Digital Arts (ADA)
commitment to preparing industry- ready
graduates after the first year of studies. ADAs
alumni will be involved in the design,
development and implementation of the

Museum project is an incredible opportunity for
The Academy of Digital Arts game development
students and alum. Not only will they be able to
add an innovative and unique interactive media
project to their CVs after only one year of
studying, but they can also prove that South
African interactive media and game developers
are absolutely ready to compete on the
international market. For me as the contact point
at GDoutsourcing for international clients that
are looking for young talents this is a great
help making sure that international companies are
more open to hire the Academys Alumni. I cannot
thank the District Six Museum enough for their
support and open- mindedness. This partnership
not only showcases student talent but also
offers a platform for meaningful contribution to
the District Six Museums historical narrative.
April 2024 will see the projects first test
with former District Six residents, a pivotal
moment before the anticipated May 2024
launch. The District Six Experience A Walk
