Hearing Aid-Devices are small, electronic,
wearable medical devices which are worn either
in-the-ear, on-the-ear or behind-the-ear. These
devices are used by patients with partial or
complete hearing loss. A hearing aid-device helps
the person with hearing loss to listen and
communicate by amplifying the sound reaching the
ear. The device comprises of three parts which
include a microphone, amplifier and a speaker.
The sound is received in the hearing aid-device
through the microphone which then converts the
sound waves to electrical signals and sends them
to the amplifier. The amplifier then increases
the intensity of the signals and sends them to
the ear through speaker, thereby helping the
person with hearing loss to hear.

    devices which are designed to help patients

    their design, technology they are using for sound
    amplification and any additional feature.

  • Behind-the-ear-aids Majority of the parts of the
    hearing-aid-devices are present inside a small
    compact plastic case which rests just behind the
    ear and is connected to earpiece through a clear
    tubing.
  • On-the-ear-aids This is also a type of
    behind-the-ear-aids which can fit both
    behind-the-ear and on-the-ear. These hearing
    aid-devices are more compact in size, more
    comfortable and lighter as compared to the
    behind-the-ear-aids. An almost invisible, very
    thin tube is used to connect the
    hearing-aid-device to the ear canal.
  • In-the-ear-aids All the parts of these hearing
    aid-devices are confined in a shell which fills
    in the outer part of the ear.
  • In-the-canal-aids The parts of these hearing
    aid-devices are contained in a highly small and
    compact case which fits partly or completely into
    the ear canal. These are the smallest available
    hearing aid-devices.
  • Technologies Used in Hearing Aid-Devices
  • Analog The hearing aid-devices amplify the
    continuous sound waves and make them louder. Some
    of the analog hearing aid-devices are
    programmable and they amplify all kinds of sound
    waves in the same way.
  • Digital The hearing aid-devices based on digital
    technology have features similar to the hearing
    aid-devices based on analog technology. These
    hearing aid-devices convert sound waves into
    digital signals and produce exact duplication of

  • Prescription-Based Hearing Aid-Devices This
    includes the hearing aid-devices which are
    prescribed by a healthcare professional for a
    particular patient after conducting the medical
    and audiological examination. These are basically
    prescribed after understanding the level of
    hearing loss. These hearing-aid devices cannot be
    purchased without the prescription of a doctor.
  • Over-The-Counter Hearing Aid-Devices This
    includes those category of hearing aid-devices
    which can be purchased either online or offline
    without the requirement of any kind of
    prescription from a doctor. The over-the-counter
    hearing aids are not available in most of the
    countries across the globe since there are no FDA
    guidelines or specifications established for the
    sale of over-the-counter hearing aids. Hence,
    they are still not commercialized. However,
    over-the-counter hearing aid-devices are
    available in certain countries in Asia Pacific
    region including China, Japan, among others.
  • The United States Congress in 2017 asked the FDA
    to establish a category of over-the-counter
    hearing aid-devices and make certain guidelines
    and regulations related to them. An
    Over-The-Counter Hearing Aid Act was passed in
    2017 since then the FDA has been working to
    create regulations on this new category of
    hearing aid-devices. The guidelines were expected
    to come by 2020 but due to the pandemic crisis
    they got delayed and hence the commercialization
    of over-the-counter hearing aid-devices also got
    delayed.
  • In July 2021, the President of the United States
    signed an executive order to address the
    long-anticipated rules on the classification of
    over-the-counter hearing aid-devices. The
    President has directed the United States
    Department of Health and Human Services to issue
    the proposed guidelines regulations on
    over-the-counter hearing aid-devices within 120
    days. These guidelines are expected from the FDA
    in October 2021, after which over-the-counter
    hearing aid devices could be expected to be
    launched in the market by 2022 wherein they are
    unavailable. It is expected that when the
    over-the-counter hearing aid-devices get
    commercialized and launched in the United States
    they will also be made available in markets of
    other parts across the globe which abide by the
    FDA policies and regulations or have their own
    stringent regulatory association. Post launch in
    the United States, they will be first expected in
    the United Kingdom.
