2
Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) occurs when
walls of blood become narrow due to increased
buildup on them. This condition is common among
people with Type 2 Diabetes and those who are
prone to high cholesterol and heart disease.
Buildup and narrowed arteries can put people
suffering from PAD at a high risk of heart attack
and stroke. PAD is similar to coronary artery
disease (CAD).
What are the symptoms of PAD? Some of the
symptoms of PAD include 1- Pain in calves while
walking and exercising that goes away with rest
2- Numbness, tingling, or a feeling of pins and
needles in the lower legs or feet 3- Cuts
or sores that dont heal or heal slowly 4- If
you experience any of these symptoms, consult a
physician offering treatments for PAD.
3
What are the causes of PAD? Plaque buildup on
the blood vessel walls restricts the flow of
blood and oxygen to the legs and feet. Depending
upon its severity, you may experience pain in
your lower legs while walking that goes away as
you rest and comes back as you start walking.
Also, you may feel numbness, tingling, and
coldness in legs while you rest.
What are the risk factors for PAD? You may be at
risk of PAD if you 1- Have a family history of
heart diseases 2- Have high cholesterol 3- Have
high blood pressure 4- Have had a previous heart
attack or stroke 5- Are overweight or obese 6-
Are physically inactive 7- Are a smoker 8- Are
over the age of 50
4
Consult a physician experienced in providing
peripheral artery disease treatment in
Northbrook.
What are the common treatments for PAD? PAD can
easily be diagnosed in a simple, painless way,
and it can be managed through a combination of
medication and lifestyle changes such as
5
Quitting smoking. 1- Eating a well-balanced
diet to manage the blood glucose levels and
weight. 2- Lowering the intake of cholesterol,
saturated fat and sodium in your diet to
manage blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
3- Keeping your blood pressure in check. 4-
Following a moderate exercise program.
Left untreated, PAD could lead to gangrene and
amputation. You should follow these tips in
order to prevent such conditions. If you have
PAD, you should consult a physician specialized
in handling PAD cases in California. A physician
will conduct some necessary tests to determine
the severity of your problem, and suggest a
treatment that would be best for you.
