Introduction
  • Text - The Future of Business

3
Prologue. What will a college degree do for you?
  • a. Get and keep a better job.
  • b. Earn more money. Bachelors degree -25,000
more than high school diploma. 45 yrs worth
    1,125,000.
  • c. Get a good start in life. I dont know what
that means but I do know that a good basic
education makes you much more flexible. That is,
you will be much more able to handle problems in
    your life and business.

4
Learning the basics of business
  • Who is in business? Any one who spends money.
  • Choosing a career. 40 hrs a week for 45 yrs is
    90,000 hrs

5
Success in business
  • Think on your feet Take up debating - Broad
    educational background
  • Empower yourself
  • People skills
  • Acquire political savvy

6
  • e. Handle conflicts Best idea - Learn to listen
effectively. How do you do that? Do not allow
emotion to color what you hear. This is extremely
difficult to do because your life experiences
affect how you define the words that you hear.
    Frequently your experiences attach emotional
responses to words. In order to listen
critically you must be able to not allow any
emotion associated with words that you hear to
    color what you are hearing.
  • f. Crisis management Oxymoron most crisis are
characterized by chaos. If chaos is manageable it
    is not chaos.
  • g. Creativity Everyone is creative. He red
difference is that some people want to be
creative and the rest simply do not think about
    it.

7
  • h. Persuasiveness Whats in it for me?
  • i. Teambuilding Remember, in almost all
circumstances two heads or four eyes are better.
The major exception is decision making. Most
societies expect one person to take
responsibility for failure. It take guts to stand
up and be accountable. These days it seems no one
wants to be accountable for anything.
  • j. Attention to detail

8
  • All of these require confidence, intellect, and
    guts.
  • A really good sense of humor helps.
  • You may think that confidence ad guts are the
same thing. I have know people who were supremely
confident in their knowledge and ability but
would not take on difficult tasks where they
could fail. In order to really succeed at
anything you must be willing to risk failure.

9
Planning
  • A plan is an ordered process for accomplishing a
goal or objective. The essential thing in
planning is to set a date at which the goal or
objective will be achieved. If you want something
but are unwilling to develop a plan, your goal or
objective will never be more than a whish.
  • If whishes were horses beggars would ride!

10
  • A plan has five specific elements
  • A goal or objective
  • A schedule
  • A budget
  • set of rules
  • A criterion for determining when the goal or
objective has been achieved. You may think that
this will be obvious but it probably isnt.

11
  • All plans have five elements
  • Definition of even the goal
  • Schedule for completion
  • Cost
  • Rules that must be followed
  • Acceptance criteria
