American Public Power Association
  • APPA is the service organization for the nation's
    more than 2,000 community-owned electric
    utilities.
  • Its purpose is to advance the public policy
    interests of its members and their consumers, and
    provide member services to ensure adequate,
    reliable electricity at a reasonable price with
    the proper protection of the environment

Facts About Public Power
  • More than 2,000 community-owned electric
    utilities
  • Serve more than 45 million Americans or 14 of
    the nations electricity customers
  • Some of the nation's largest cities including
    Los Angeles, San Antonio and Orlando operate
    public power utilities, but many are small,
    serving 3,000 or fewer customers.
  • 1,400 utilities serve communities with
    populations of 10,000 or fewer

Leading by Example Public Power
Programs Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED)
  • Sacramento Municipal Utility District received a
    LEED-EB Platinum certification for their Customer
    Service Center.
  • Benefits to SMUD include lower maintenance costs,
    reduced energy use, improved indoor air quality,
    reduction in toxic chemicals, increased
    productivity and positive customer relations.
  • Wisconsin Public Power Inc. plans to begin an
    addition and remodeling project on their Sun
    Prairie headquarters.
  • The facility will be built to LEED New
    Construction Gold standards. This will include
    using less energy and allowing for more light to
    enter the building.

Energy Audits Public Power Programs
  • Tallahassee Electric Utility, Florida offers free
    energy audits to residential and business
    customers, which includes information on
    achieving greater energy efficiency and on
    low-interest loans and rebates for renewable
    energy implementation.
  • Anchorage Municipal Light Power, Alaska offers
    a Web-based energy audit tool identifying methods
    for customers to save energy and improve energy
    efficiency.

CFLs Public Power Programs
  • Lansing Board of Water Light, MI - Change a
    Light, Change Michigan Program partners with Ace
    Hardware retailers to offer CFLs for a reduced
    price and encouraging residents to switch to the
    energy-saving bulbs.
  • Oberlin Municipal Light Power, Ohio purchases
    CFLs in bulk and sells them individually to
    customers from the Administrative Office or a
    local hardware store for the reduced, bulk price.
  • Colorado Springs Utilities, Colorado offers 1
    discount on CFLs when purchased at participating
    local retailers with no limit on quantity of CFLs
    purchased.

Educational Programs Public Power Programs
  • Springfield City Water, Light Power, Illinois
    offers free workshops designed to help
    residential customers learn home energy
    efficiency improvements, which can be implemented
    at little to no cost.
  • Cleveland Public Power, Ohio offers free home
    energy efficiency and conservation improvement
    clinics.
  • Colton Public Utilities, Calif. offers Kids
    Korner, an online portal where children can learn
    about the importance of energy efficiency, ways
    to make their home more energy efficient, and
    calculate energy usage in their home.

Commercial Customers Public Power Programs
  • Anaheim Public Utilities, Calif. waives building
    permit fees for business when retrofitting
    inefficient equipment with approved energy
    efficient equipment
  • Alameda Power Telecom, Calif. offers rebates
    for retrofitting existing buildings with high
    efficiency lighting and/or high efficiency air
    conditioning equipment
  • Idaho Falls Power, Idaho offers a zero interest
    loan to qualifying commercial customers for
    installation of energy efficient lighting and
    other conservation upgrades

Load Management Public Power Programs
  • Columbia Water Light, Missouri allows customers
    to sign up the load management program during
    summer months, which involves the installation of
    a radio-signal switch to cycle participants air
    conditioning systems during peak load periods,
    customers can receive a 5 discount on their
    summer electricity bills.
  • The Long Island Power Authority offers the
    LIPAedge program to help meet peak electric
    demand during the summer. A digital programmable
    thermostat is provided and installed free of
    charge and allows LIPA to adjust the operation
    and temperature of the customers air
    conditioning system a few days throughout the
    summer.

    student research grants/internships available
    annually.
