SHELVING MATERIALS (NOT FOR PATRON USE)All
books are to be shelved in an upright position if
possible. Materials too tall are to be shelved
spines down with the Dewey Decimal Classification
number out toward the aisle for easy visibility.
(For further information on using this system,
see DEWEY DECIMAL CLASSIFICATION). Each shelf
in the stacks should have a large bookend. If it
is missing, the Circulation Department should
have a supply. If there is not enough room on
the shelf to file a book, shift the shelved books
either forward or backward to make ample room.
If extensive shifting is necessary, return the
item to the sorting area and notify
supervisor.A subject label should be on each
shelf, and signs should be put upon the ends of
double-sided bookshelves to indicate which
subjectsare on each side. Lastly, signs with
the Librarys floor plans shouldbe posted
throughout which show the locations of various
subjects.

WEEDING (NOT FOR PATRON USE)Keeping up the
appearance of the Library encourages Patrons to
maintain good care of the books. Therefore, it
is essential to replace worn or damaged books
with newer materials. Materials that are old,
outdated, or inappropriate should be pulled from
the shelves. Books that have not been circulated
for at least two years (or have too many
duplicates that havent been circulated), must
also be considered for weeding. All weeding
decisions must comply with the Weeding Policies
Manual and brought before the Library Committee
in order to reach a decision on its further
status.Items which have been shelved
incorrectly should not be up for weeding status.
Please reshelve these items in their proper
places.Weeded materials should be put in
storage to be sold at our annual Book Fair which
is held every August.
Knapp Knowledge Public Library
"Systematic weeding," wrote the authors of
"Weeding the Small Library Collection," issued by
the American Library Association in 1962, "is not
an irresponsible disposal of public property, but
a public service which is often the first, most
needed act in increasing library use."

PRIVACY and CONFIDENTIALITYPrivacy Employees
of the Library may not talk about Patrons
requests outside of the library environment. If
discussing a Patron is crucial, please discuss
quietly with a fellow employee in a private place
away from other Patrons.Confidentiality The
Council of the American Library Association (ALA)
strongly recommends that any library does not
make circulation records available to any agency
of state, federal, or local government.
Resistance should be exercised when the issuance
or enforcement of any legal process, order, or
subpoena occurs. The ALA Code of Ethics, Point
II states We protect each
library users right to privacy and
confidentiality with respect to
information sought or
received and materials consulted, borrowed,
acquired or transmitted.
