3- The aim of Invention for Innovation (i4i) is to
improve the identification of innovative
healthcare technologies and accelerate the
development of new healthcare products for the

5- Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI)
- The aim of SBRI is to use government procurement
to drive technology development, through
competitive tendering especially in early-stage
companies. - First call in HCAI opened Oct 08 closed Nov.
Contracts being placed for phase 1 now.
6- Healthcare Technology Co-operatives
- Virtual organisation which will bring together a
wide spectrum of stakeholders with a common
purpose. - Bowel Function HTC

8Future Product Development (FPD)
- 1. Future Product Development Stream 1 (FPD1)
Feasibility study - Up to 1 year, clinician or academic led, to study
if prior basic research can be used to meet a
healthcare need, funding 100K maximum is
available. - 2. Future Product Development Stream 2 (FPD2)
Applied research project - Detailed 2-3 year investigation, clinician or
academic led, to provide further evidence of the
capability to deliver improved healthcare
outcomes, funding 150K-250K per year is
available. - Future Product Development Stream 3 (FPD3)
- a) Commercial Viability Study Up to one year,
collaborative, to study innovative use of an
existing or emerging product or technology to
meet a healthcare need. First stage of a full
collaborative applied research project, 75
funding 100K typically available. - b) Collaborative applied research Detailed 2-3
year investigation, collaborative between
industrial and research partners, to demonstrate
the delivery of improved healthcare outcomes, 50
funding 300K per year is typically available.

10Assessment of proposals
- The same criteria are used to assess proposals to
each of the three streams - Scientific and technical quality
- Clinical or healthcare need
- Market potential
- Freedom to operate
- Arrangements for protecting IP generated
- Project team quality
- Project plan quality
- Involvement of users and industry
- Justification of resources
11Benefits of FPD
- The FPD programme has been designed to offer
investigators -
- Flexibility of entry points dependent on the
maturity of the idea investigators can apply for
funding from any of the three streams and if
appropriate proceed from stream to stream. - Co-ordination between streams through having the
one secretariat. - Support to projects that meet their milestones
and show promise so that they can move onto the
next funding stream with the minimum of delay and
are accelerated along the innovation pathway. - A rolling programme of calls for proposals to
better fit with the innovation process
12Project Support
- Project support consists of
- Project monitoring
- Exploitation advice
