  • Social Darwinism was a theory that some races
    were more advanced and therefore better than
    others because of the race and not any other
    factor. Imperialists used the doctrine to
    legitimize their actions

  • The waterway that connects the Mediterranean Sea
    and the Red Sea is very old
  • There is evidence of a canal system there dating
    back to the second millennia BC.

  • The Greeks and Romans maintained a canal-like
    system there for centuries
  • It was destroyed and rebuilt countless times
    before finally being put out of commission in the
    8th C AD

  • In 1856 work began to rebuild the canal
  • French money
  • Egyptian labor
  • The British were threatened by the French
    controlling the canal
  • Sent armed Bedouins to disrupt the construction

  • The canal would be finished in 1869
  • But Egypt would soon fall into civil war
  • Unable to pay their debts relating to the canal
    they sold the debt to the U.K.
  • Even though France was still the primary
    shareholder the U.K. occupied Egypt and took over
    the canal
