(Group of polar Scientists from different areas
of expertise)
(Educate all generations about polar regions)
Agency Ciência Viva
(Outreach)
3Most important challenges?
- How to get other polar scientists to participate
in outreach actions? - How to spread the polar knowledge?
- How to get teachers and general public interested
in the polar regions? - Problem Portugal never participated in any
IPY, and had very small relationship with the
polar regions!
4What did we do?
- Establish a network between scientists, Ciência
Viva science centres and schools (E-learning
platform). - Training teachers regarding polar affairs
(Lectures).
400 teachers and 200 schools.
5First test The contest!!!
Discovering the Polar Regions
600 school projects (composition, art work, film,
website, science experiment and a Iglo . 8000
Students involved (from primary to secondary).
Distributed 180 prices.
6Results?
- The knowledge of the students and teachers of
the polar regions grew. - There was a strong involvement from this group.
- Problem Little interest from the general
public!!!
7Students On Ice
8Great impact!!!
9Go global!!!
IGLO videoconference Our changing planet past
and present
10Hands on Ice!
11From science centres to Antarctica!
12Science and Art!
13Results?
- General public is more involved and aware of the
problems in the polar regions. - They had FUN!!!
14Schools feedback?
15Polar Science Weekend!
- Lecture from David Carson President of the IPY.

- Polar film festival
- Quiz games.
- Posters session.
- School projects exhibit.
