  • The same technical and economic drivers that
fueled much of the commitment to e-science, .
are also shaping the future of scholarly
communication .. Notable and important examples
include the movements towards open access to
    scientific literature movements towards open
access to underlying scientific data demands
(particularly in the face of some recent
high-profile cases of scientific fraud and
    misconduct) for greater accountability and
audibility of science through structures and
    practices that facilitate the verification,
    reproducibility and re-analysis of scientific
results and efforts to improve the collective
societal return on investment in scientific
research through a recognition of the lasting
value of much scientific data and the way that
the investment it represents can be amplified by
disclosure, curation and facilitation of reuse.
Note that in the final area the investments
include but go beyond the financial consider the
human costs of clinical trials for example.

Enhanced publications
  • have complex metadata because
  • publication includes research data, simulations,
    models, algoritms, visualisations, structured by
    rdf-triples
  • authorship is fragmented
  • components are distributed
  • versions become releases, annotated originals
  • advance
  • improved quality control by enabling
    verification, reproducibility, re-analysis,
  • amplified research process through concatenated
    use of data, algoritms etc.

Project data
  • DRIVER is a (small) FP6 STREP http//cordis.europa
    .eu/fp6/instr_strp.htm
  • in http//cordis.europa.eu/ist/
  • with overall budget of M 2,507 and
  • EC contribution of M 1,835
  • starting at 01/06/2006 for a period of 18 months
  • Web http//www.driver-community.eu/

7
National agents
  • The knowledge infrastructure testbed, delivered
by DRIVER, will be based on nationally organized
    digital repository infrastructures The
successful DARE network in the Netherlands,
recently presented to the public by the project
partner SURF, will serve as model to DRIVER.

Two layers, concept
  • DRIVER with its testbed will not build a
    specific digital repository system with
pre-defined services, based on a specific
technology and serving dedicated communities. The
testbed will in its inception focus on the
    infrastructure aspect, i.e., open, clearly
defined interfaces to the content network, which
allow any qualified service-provider to build
    services on top of it.
