  • UNISON urges you to vote YES

3
The ballot on strike action to save our pensions
started on 20 February
  • The Government wants to force all local
government workers to work until 65 or face a cut
of up to one third in our pensions.

4
The Government claims we are all living longer
  • Life expectancy for many ordinary people,
especially in manual and low paid jobs has hardly
risen in the last twenty years

5
They say our pensions cost too much
  • Fact average local government pension 3,800
    per year
  • Fact - average pension for a woman in LGPS
    1,600
  • Average pension for directors in FTSE 100
    Companies - 167,000 per year
  • MPs pension - 38,000

6
They say they cant afford it
  • Many pension schemes took pension holidays when
    funds were high
  • That means they did not pay the employers
    contribution into the scheme
  • Now they want us to pay

7
They claim the 85 year rule breaks European
rules on age discrimination
  • Fact The EU spokesperson on employment, social
affairs and equal opportunities, Katherina von
Schnurbein, has confirmed that this is not true

8
Our pensions arent free Weve paid for them
  • We pay 6 from our own pay toward our pensions
  • The employers contribution is deferred wages
in other words we are paid less now to enable us
    to build a pension.

9
Local government workers being treated worst of
all
  • Members of the Teachers, Civil Service, and NHS
pension schemes have been offered protection for
    life.
  • In Local Government anyone born after 1 April
1953 will be hit straight away.

10
Together we can defend our pensions
  • Last March the Government were forced to retreat
from the attack on our pensions by the prospect
of united strike action on 23 March 2005
  • Ten unions representing over 1.5 million workers
are balloting. This would be the biggest strike
action since the 1926 General Strike

11

  • Ballot started 20 February
  • If you have not received a ballot paper by 25
