1
As interpreted by Sherisse A. Goodwin
  • Digital Immigrants vs. Digital Natives in
    Mathematics

2
Topics of Interest
  • Definitions
  • Immigrants Teaching Natives
  • Teaching Strategies for Digital Natives
  • Changes in Mathematical Teaching World
  • Possible Solutions to Implement
  • Conclusion

3
Digital Immigrants and Digital Natives
  • Digital Immigrants born before the digital
evolution adapting to the digital world
  • Digital Native born into the digital world
having no knowledge of analog devices

4
Immigrants Teaching Natives
  • Teachers instruct the way they were trained and
may not equipped in using technology for teaching
  • May not use new technology to engage students
causing boredom and inattentiveness of students
  • May view technology as a class disturbance not a
    learning tool

5
Immigrant Strategies for Natives
  • Implement technology to interest students
  • Use technology as an aid but not as a replacement
    for traditional learning
  • Allow students to use technology to solve
    problems and perform research

6
Changes in Mathematical Teaching World
  • More devices to use for problem solving
  • Difficult to assess homework assignments there
are web pages that compute solutions
  • Must implement multi-media in lessons, but math is
    a practice sport

7
Solutions to Implement
  • Assign students performance assessments for a set
of problems using different devices and present
    information
  • Assign students weekly performance assessments to
see if they are understanding concepts
  • Use multi-media in lessons but allot time for
    problem solving at blackboard

8
Conclusion
  • There is definitely a bridge to gap with digital
    immigrants teaching digital natives. However,
the digital immigrants will adjust, because they
began the first research and development for the
    digital devices.
  • Using multi-media and digital devices in the
classroom is excellent for learning as long as
the student also learns the old fashion way to
know the device output is reasonable.
