    retrieve, manipulate, analyze, and display
    information about objects and events on earth.
  • GIS associates information from different
    sources by relating them according to location. 
  • The data from these sources can be grouped
    into manageable and meaningful layers that can be
    combined to form a single map.
  • GIS is a tool that gives a further spatial
    dimension to analysis and presentations

Relevance of GIS in the Planning Process
  • Planning is an ongoing, non-deterministic
    process that deals with numerous variables which
    change over time.
  • Thus the purpose for GIS is to help decision
    support and planning support systems.
  • GIS can be applied to identify problems,
    display data and information, manage facilities
    and services, monitor daily operations, selection
    of locations for plants and services. informed
    prediction all of which facilitate and enhance
    the planning process
  • Planning decisions and predictions have to be
    informed and based on a plethora of information,
    and a set of alternatives which will facilitate
    and enhance the planning process
