begins we find ourselves watching the first of
many slideshows we will witness this year.This
presentation presents an overview of lab
practices that we will observe to help keep us
safe.Sit back, relax (the quiz isnt until
tomorrow), and enjoy the show.
3The lab is a place for discovery and learning,
but...
safety is our first priority.
4Safety goggles rule!
Your eyes are important so please protect them!
Goggles dont make you look goofy - they make you
look smart.
I wear mine every chance I get.

6Lab coats or aprons are recommended and are also
quite fashionable.
7Other points about attire
- Contact lenses are discouraged
- Closed toe shoes and long pants should be worn in
the lab - Be aware of loose clothing, dangling jewelry and
long hair
8Absolutely no food or drink in the lab.
9Follow directions.
NO UNAUTHORIZED EXPERIMENTS!!!
Ask your teacher if you would like to try a
different procedure.
10Never taste anything in the lab.
Never eat or drink using lab equipment.
11Do not directly smell a chemical.
12Gently waft the sample to your nose.
13Know where safety equipment is located and how to
use it.

18Notify your instructor in case of an accident or
spill.
19Keep your lab area clean and clear of unnecessary
items.

20Excess reagents should never be returned to stock
bottles.
If you take too much, dispose of the excess.
Never put a pipette, spatula, or dropper into a
reagent bottle.
21Never leave burners unattended.
Be sure the gas valve is shut off when you are
done with a lab.
Never use an open flame when working with
flammable substances.
22When diluting an acid, always pour the acid into
the water.
23When heating a test tube, point it away from
yourself and others.
24After notifying your teacher, clean up spills and
broken glass immediately.
Dispose of broken glass and used chemicals
according to your teachers directions.
25Beware of hot glass - it looks exactly like cold
glass.
26If chemicals come into contact with your skin or
clothing, flush immediately with generous amounts
of water and consult with your teacher.
27Absolutely no horseplay in the lab.
28At the end of the lab leave a clean workstation.
Always wash your hands with soap and water after
a lab.
