Some characteristics of the Dominican Republic
  • Area 48,442 km².
  • Perimeter 1,963 km (1,575 km of coast and 488 km
    of boarder with Haiti).
  • Lowest point is the Enriquillo Lake with 43 m
    under the sea level and the highest is the
    Duartes Peak with 3,175 m over the sea level,
    being the highest of the Antilles.

Objectives of the National System of Protected
Areas
1.- Preserve the representative natural
ecosystems of the diverse biographic and
ecological regions of the country. 2.- Protect
the watersheds, hydrologic cycles, biotic
communities, particular genetic resources and the
genetic diversity of natural ecosystems and their
elements. 3.- Support the development of
ecotechnics and improve the rational and
sustainable used of the natural ecosystems and
their elements. 4.- Protect scenaries and
natural views.

Of the 86 protected areas that are included in
the National System of Protected Areas, only 34
counts with administration. This administration
consist in a manager, supervisor, rangers,
secretarys, in the case of marine areas a boat
captain, ticket sellers, etc.
