Title: Location Based Information Services

1
Location Based Information Services
  • Project Partners
  • Mohamed Elsewe
  • Rahul Vaghela
  • Srikanth Poranki

2
LBIS System
  • Providing location-based information like
  • Hospitals/Medical Centers , Police stations, AAA
    services, etc.
  • Using Global Positioning System.
  • The incorporation of GPS receivers into
mobile phones, required by the U.S. Federal
    Communications Commission (FCC) beginning in
October 2001 allows wireless service providers to
provide their mobile users with location-based
    service information.
  • The service will support hand-held devices like
  • Laptop, Cellular phone, Palm Pilots

3
Why Middleware architecture for LBIS?
  • Service of this type will require dealing with a
    variety of platforms (Interoperability /
    Heterogeneity)
  • for a variety of Operating Systems, Programming
    Languages, and Database Systems.
  • Scalability Real-time application expects a
    heavy load of service users.
  • Efficiency / Fault tolerance - A must when
    providing Emergency Services.
  • Common interface to allow the mobile user to
access databases from a variety of providers.

4
Why CORBA?
  • Compared to COM or EJB - proven wider reach.
  • COM - only works on Microsoft platform.
  • EJB - has dependencies.
  • - total interoperability is questionable.
  • CORBA
  • - platform- and language- independent.
  • - widely accepted standard by large
    corporations.
  • - Flexible communication channel - ORB can be
modified as per requirements using policies. Most
importantly, communication can be made secure.

5
Research
  • Suitable ORB (Visibroker, IDLJ).
  • Market Demand for the service.
  • Real-time support for the service.
  • Services available in the market.
  • WML interface and use of WAP for the service.

6
Logical Flow of System Operation
  • Mobile Unit / Hand-held device has continuous
    communication with the GPS System.
  • When a request is made, location parameters are
provided to the LBIS system through the mobile
    unit.
  • LBIS system
  • - a decision-making component which routes the
request in accordance to the location.
  • - info-retrieving component which mines the
respective database and provides the output at
    client.

7
Simulation Goal
  • To allow the mobile user seamless,
    provider-independent, and location-based
    information wireless services.
  • The mobile roaming user should be able to access
the location-based services provided by another
wireless provider outside his/her coverage area.
Currently, this service is not available between
    wireless service providers.

8
Technologies Used
  • Middleware Architecture - CORBA
  • ORB - IDLJ (provided in jdk1.3)
  • Programming Language Java
  • Database - MS ACCESS
  • DB Connectivity - JDBC-ODBC Bridge
  • User Interface - JSP, HTML
  • Web Server/JSP Engine - ORION
