3- The Workshop was organized by
-
- the Corpo Forestale dello Stato (CFS) of Italy
- the FAO (with the support of the Silva
Mediterranea Working Group on Forest Fires) - the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European
Commission, Ispra, Italy. -
- Forty-seven persons from 15 countries, the
European Commission, the Global Fire Monitoring
Centre and FAO participated in the workshop.
4The workshop was hosted by the Circeo National
Park in Sabaudia - Rome
5It came after one of the most horrible years for
forest fires in the Mediterranean
6 In Italy
While in the period 2000 2007 we have had an
average of 7,583 fires per year and an average
of 41,838 hectares of forests burned in the
year 2007 there were 10,614 forest fires which
destroyed 115,242 hectares of forest . In the
year 2007, 23 persons died for forest fires, the
highest number from 1975 (in the whole period
1975 - 2007 we have had 198 casualties) The
98 of forest fires are caused by people, only 2
by natural phenomena such as lightning or
volcanic eruptions.

8Objectives of the workshop
- To promote regional cooperation on wildfire
management in the Mediterranean. -
- To promote the use of information systems for the
prevention of forest fires. - To discuss the causes of fires in the
Mediterranean, including the role of arson.
9Five plenary sessions on
- Major activities in fire management
- Legislation and information
- Fire information systems
- Human causes of fire
- Cooperation between Mediterranean countries
10Three final working groups
11The main elements arisen from plenaries
sessions and working groups were
- To consider forest fires as part of the more
general topic of the Risk Management in Europe . - To priorize a global policy of prevention instead
of suppression. - To stress the importance of the coordination
between North-South and East - West Mediterranean
countries (EU or not).
