2Introduction
- Government of India, Dept. of Science and
Technology has sanctioned the project for
organizing baseline studies and capacity building
in Radio production for the RVPSP sponsored
project- Science for Women at Vasundhara Vahini
Vidya Pratishthans Institute of Information
Technology, Baramati. - The baseline study and Capacity building is being
conducted by Commonwealth Educational Media
Center for Asia (CEMCA), New Delhi for Women
Child Health Nutrition through Community
Radio during the last week of September 2007.

- Science and technology based programming can play
very important role for making difference in the
lives of women. Considering these facts,
Vasundhara Vahini will broadcast Science for
Women project for the rural women to empower
them with the current knowledge in every field
and walk of life, especially in her day today
routine work so that they can at least have
cursory knowledge of the things happening in and
around her. - Objectives of the Project
- To inculcate scientific awareness among women by
empowering them with practical, scientific
knowledge indispensable in everyday life, namely
Science in Kitchen, hygiene, agriculture,
housekeeping, nutrition, education and parenting
of the children. Series of 365 programs on above
theme in radio magazine format will be produced
and aired for one full year. The impact of each
of these programs on the target audience will be
periodically assessed and programs will be
restructured on feed back of audience.

- Target Groups
- The audience of Vasundhara Vahini is
agriculturist and rural women in the 90.4 FM
listening zone with a territory of about 15 to
20 kms of radius in all directions covering a
population of about fifty thousand. - Methodology
- It is proposed to produce 365 episodes of 10
minutes duration under the broad theme, Women,
Science and Social Change. The programmes would
be in the radio magazine format that would
incorporate segments such as Interviews, radio
drama/skit, talks, letters, live queries, success
stories, quiz and public service messages etc.
The duration of project is 12 month-365 programs
of 15 minutes daily soap. The language employed
will be Marathi, which is the local language.
5 Baseline Studies Capacity Building
- Commonwealth Educational Media Center for Asia
(CEMCA), New Delhi is conducting Base line Survey
and Capacity Building.
6Baseline Survey
- The basic aim behind conducting the baseline
survey is to collect data from women community
members for finding out the role of media
channels in their day to day life - Accordingly, 2o students and 10 women from
community has conducted baseline survey of total
1489 women community members.

- Identification of the surveyors
- Ten students ten women from the community are
identified for conducting this survey. All
selected women are from Self Help Groups. - Translation of the questionnaire
- The questionnaire prepared for the survey has
been translated into the local language of
communication Marathi. -

- Training to the surveyors
- College staff members and Ms. Rukmini, CEMCA has
provided detailed training to all the surveyors
about how to conduct the survey. - Initially participants are made clear with all
the questions in the questionnaire. Then they are
separated into the groups. The groups are
allotted target areas (nearby villages) for next
two days for survey. -
- The villages covered under this survey include
Baramati City, Pandare, Junction, Khandobha
Nagar, Dorlewadi,Malad, Katewadi, Malegaon,
Malegaon (Sugar Factory area), Moregaon, Phaltan
etc.

- Questionnaire Data Entry
- The filled up questionnaires are submitted to
the concerned college staff for checking at the
end of every day. - The checked questionnaires are forwarded for the
data entry as per the prescribed format . -

- Data Analysis and Interpretation
- Final analysis of the entire data has been made
by the CEMCA Staff. -
- As per the data analysis following facts are
observed - Out of the total surveyed community, 68
population contributes to the Vasundhara Vahini
listeners.

- Out of the total surveyed community, 78
population feel that the community radio can help
them to find solutions of their problems like
Health Hygine, Polution, tips on farming, use
of Information Technology etc. - As per the suryey conducted, most of the
population listen to good music and useful
information disseminated through radio. -

- Data Analysis and Interpretation
- Out of the total surveyed community, 50 women
are interested to participate in Community Radio
Programmes, 44.5 are interested to be community
representative and 41.8 women are interested to
be Radio Jockey -
16Capacity Building Workshop
- Three days Capacity Building Workshop was
organized by CEMCA during 29th September to 1st
October 2007. - The basic aim behind this workshop was to
identify potential radio anchors, among the
students workers from the community. - And to train them on

- Forms of radio presentation
- Art of Interview
- Studio recording
- Outdoor recording through flash recorder
- Elements of editing
- Mixing
- Participatory radio programmes
- Interactive radio programmes like
Phone-in,phone-out and SMS etc
