3What is Reading Accuracy?
- Webster Defines Accuracy as
- Freedom from mistake or error
- Reading Accuracy is the ability to read without
mistakes or errors.
4Improving Accuracy
- Accuracy improves
- when students have decoding strategies in place
to decode words. - when students practice reading words accurately.
- An increase in accuracy leads to better fluency
and comprehension.
5Research Base
- Accurate decoding is an important foundation
of reading comprehension, and is a skill that
must be mastered if students are going to be able
to read to learn. - (Gough Tunmer, 1986 Vellutino, Tunmer, Jacard,
Chen, 2007)
6Research Base
- Evidence indicates that context is not a primary
strategy used by good readers to recognize words.
(Juel, 1991 Share Stanovich, 1995) - Context enables the reader to accurately read 1
out of 4 words (Gough Hillinger, 1980)
7 - Two factors are relevant for fast and fluent word

- speed
8Suggested Accuracy Rates

9What is Reading Fluency?
-
- Reading fluency refers to
- a level of accuracy and rate where decoding
is relatively effortless where oral reading is
smooth and accurate with correct prosody and
where attention can be allocated to
comprehension - (Wolf Katzir-Cohen, 2001)
10Measures for Assessing ORF

- AIMSWeb
- (most widely used)
11Calculating ORF Accuracy
- ORF
- One minute timing
- total words read errors WCPM
- Less than one minute timing
- of words read errors total seconds
- X 60 WCPM
- Accuracy
- of words read correctly of words attempted
- X 100 accurate
12Increasing Accuracy Speed
- The oldest and most common method is the repeated
reading technique. (Samuels, 1985) - Repeated readings of passages
- Repeated reading of word lists
