Effects of the Internet on Education
3
POSITIVES
  • Easier for students to research topics for
projects, term papers, research projects, etc.
  • Great resource for parents to stay in touch with
    teachers.
  • Ex ParentConnect, email, online grading, etc.
  • Easier for adult workers to earn online degrees
  • Increase in knowledge and salary
  • Allow people to work at their own pace
  • Bulletin boards, classroom chatrooms, and email
allow 24 hour a day access to resources.
  • Unlike library

4
NEGATIVES
  • Hard for parents/teachers to control what
    websites students are visiting.
  • Online degrees sometimes do not have high
credibility when a person interviews for a job.
  • Plagiarism
  • The internet makes the work done by others very
    accessible to students.
  • Students also find it easier to cheat and copy
    other peoples work.

5
SUMMARY
  • Largest effect at the collegiate level.
  • Effects at the Elementary High School Level
becoming more and more positive as teachers are
    trained to integrate technology.
  • As with anything, there are positives and
    negatives.
  • The good news is that the positives seem to
outweigh the negatives in the world of education!

Podcasts

What is a Podcast?
  • A Podcast is a web-based audio broadcast that is
available through a subscription from the
    internet.
  • A Podcast is a type of Webcast that can be
listened to or viewed through personal computers
or portable media players, such as iPods and MP3
    players.
  • Podcast websites can directly and constantly feed
or stream music to the subscriber, automatically
    making new songs available.

9
How Is It Used Today?
  • Audio
  • Listen to music
  • Video
  • Images
  • Text
  • PDF Files
  • iTunes enable LEGAL downloads that are paid for.

10
Can It Be Used In The Curriculum?
  • An absent student can download a lesson.
  • Students and teachers can share information with
    each other at any time.
  • Teachers can create playlists of news programs,
language lessons, audio tours of museums,
    articles from Wikipedia, etc.
  • Teachers can record vocabulary lessons and Book
    Talks (much like read-alouds).
  • Video Podcasts can be used in all of these ways
    as well.
  • HOWEVER, do any of us have the resources and
    classroom material to do this?

Censorship
13
What is Censorship?
  • Removing or withholding information from the
    public audience.
  • The government, religious organizations,
    corporate organizations, political organizations,
and many other controlling organizations can
    censor information to the public.
  • A way of controlling what information is
    accessible to us.
  • Censorship is currently a HOT TOPIC in society!

14
What does SOCIETY think of Censorship?
  • Many people think that censorship is a conflict
    or violation of
  • Freedom of Speech
  • Freedom of Expression
  • Human Rights
  • It is understandable why certain forms of
censorship are used (for example military
censorship to keep information out of the enemys
hands). However, there are still several
debatable issues pertaining to when censorship
    should be allowed.

15
What about EDUCATION and Censorship?
  • The topic of school textbook censorship, or
whitewashing, is a widely debated topic.
  • Do we remove critical or damaging information
when teaching topics such as the Holocaust or
Vietnam War? Is that right to do that?
  • One example of this is the novel Fahrenheit 451,
    by Ray Bradbury.
  • This novel was ABOUT the protest of censorship
and it was censored when being taught in the
classroom until it was eventually banned.
  • Many schools are censoring the teaching of
evolution due to religious reasons. These same
schools are also censoring sexual education and
contraceptive practices in the health classroom.
