Short description of the zone
  • Zone sudano-sahelian, annual rainfall is 550 mm,
    irregular,

  • Subsistence agriculture cotton is cashcrop
    extensive animal

  • strong pression on natural resources
    (pasture-land, arable land,
  • water, wood)
  • human environment very complexe 12 differents
    ethnies,
  • 3 differents religions very strong traditionels
    chiefs
  • High population density high rural exodus
  • permanent conflicts between farmers and herdsmen
    and between
  • landed proprietors and tenant farmers

POPULATION
  • 9 /10 women illiterate 7 / 10 men illiterate
  • High personal dependancy on traditional chief
    authority lack of personal freedom
  • Traditional and modern government styles are
    strongly authoritarian
  • Population is only used to traditional
    organisation for cultural occasions
  • high concentration of political power in the
    hands of traditional chiefs and modern
    administration
