1
PIANOEarly Nutrition and Its Later Consequences
New Opportunities
  • Scientific workshop
  • held immediately before the 2nd World Congress Of
    Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology,
Nutrition on July 2nd and 3rd, 2004 in Paris.
  • Focus on subjects related to the three projects
which constitute the  EU Infant Nutrition
    Cluster
  • Workshop supported by EC Quality of Life and
Management of Living Resources Programme (QoL),
Key Action 1 on Food, Nutrition and Health
    (Contract No QLK1-CT-2002-30582)

2
The EU Infant Nutrition Cluster
  • Objectives
  • To assess the roles of early nutritional
influences on the current and future well-being
of the child and its mother.
  • To determine the potential of nutritional
interventions during pregnancy and infancy to
    modify health and well-being.

EU Childhood Obesity Early Programming by Infant
Nutrition Acronym CHOPIN
Influence of Dietary Fatty Acids on the
Pathophysiology of Intrauterine Ftal Growth and
Neonatal Development Acronym PERILIP
Trial to reduce IDDM in the genetically at risk
(nutritional primary prevention of Type 1
Diabetes) Acronym TRIGR

CHOPINContract Number QLK1-CT-2001-00389www.chi
ldhood-obesity.org
  • Objectives
  • Trial in 5 European countries to test that early
protein intake predicts infant growth and later
    risk of childhood obesity.
  • Expected Achievements
  • Improved health and quality of life by preventing
    childhood obesity.
  • Promotion of the benefits for breast-feeding.
  • A better understanding of consumer attitutes to
    infant feeding.
  • Applications
  • Potential for the development of new infant
    foods.
  • Safety data for infant formula.
  • Information for the training of health
professionals to an easier advice to consumers
    about infant feeding
  • Co-ordinator Professor Berthold Koletzko

PERILIPContract Number QLK1-CT-2001-00138www.wy
e.ic.ac.uk/Perilip
  • Objectives
  • Study of lipids in perinatal nutrition.
  • Expected Achievements
  • An improved understanding of the roles of
different fatty acids in the diets of women at
the different stages of pregnancy and during
    lactation.
  • An improved understanding of the roles played by
antioxidant status in the perinatal nutrition.
  • Applications
  • Refinement of dietary recommendations for
specific times during pregnancy and lactation
  • Improvement of formulations for intravenous
    feeding of premature babies
  • Protocols to reduce neonatal mortality in
    piglets.
  • Co-ordinator Dr. Peter F. Dodds

5
TRIGRContract Number QLK1-CT-2002-00372www.trig
r.org
  • Objectives
  • To determine whether denial of nutritional cow
milk proteins for at least 6 months of life
reduces the incidence of Type 1 diabetes in
children with increased genetic risk of
developing the disease and/or the appearance of
diabetes associated auto-antibodies by the age of
    6 and 10 years.
  • Expected Achievements
  • Find an answer to the question of the incidence
of type 1 diabetes in children by dietary
intervention in infancy in subjects with
    increased genetic risk.
  • Applications
  • Potential to use modified formula after exclusive
breast feeding to decrease the risk of Type
1diabetes in subjects with increased genetic
    risk.
  • Co-ordinator Professor Hans K. Akerblom
