Excel Workshop
  • How to Create Graphs

Objectives
  • Students will be able to enter data into Excel
    and create a line graph and a bar graph using the
    Chart Wizard

Excel Basics
  • An Excel Workbook consists of many pages called
    Worksheets
  • One box in a Worksheet is called a Cell
  • An Active Cell displays a thick border
  • Enter information into the Active Cell
  • Tab moves you to the right
  • Enter moves you to the next row

Entering Data
  • Click on the cell in which you want to enter
    information. Highlighted cell indicates cursor
    position.
  • In your spreadsheet, enter the following data in
    columns A B
  • Notice that the dependent variable must be in
    the second column!

Creating a Chart
  • Step 1 Select range of cells to display
  • Step 2 Click on the Chart icon on the top of
    the screen (if the icon is not there left-click
    Insert and then left-click Chart this will
    take you the Chart Wizard
  • Step 3 Under the Standard Types tab,
    left-click on Column. On Chart Sub-Type
    left-click on the first chart. Click Next.

HINT
  • Press and hold the bar at the bottom of the data
    to take a PREVIEW of your data as a graph!
  • Step 2 of 4 Your data should be in COLUMNS, not
    ROWS for this graph. Click Next.

Almost there!
  • Format the chart using the 6 tabs at the top of
    Step 3.
  • Under the Titles tab, change the Title to 2006
    Income Distribution in the U.S.
  • Enter X-axis as Total Household Income ()
  • Enter Y-axis as Percent of Households ()
  • Under the Legend tab, Uncheck Show Legend
  • Click on Finish The chart is basically
    complete!

Done!!!
  • The CHART should appear as an object under your
    data on the worksheet. You can position the
    chart anywhere you would like by clicking on the
    white part of the chart and dragging the chart to
    the desired location.

Now Create a Line Graph
  • Using the same data from our Bar Chart example,
    highlight the data and select the Chart Wizard
    icon again.
  • This time, left-click on Line under the
    Standard Types tab, and left-click on the first
    line graph displayed under Chart Sub-Type
  • Follow the same formatting instructions under
    Step 3 Titles, X-axis, Y-axis, etc.
  • Click on FINISH and check out your line graph!
