11.2.4.3 Non-linear Dynamics Behavior and
Simulations of Physical Chemical Processes
Heterogeneous catalytic processes taking place on
surfaces are complex processes which include
interactions between reactants, reactants and
products with the substrate and phase transitions
of the substrate itself. Examples of
such processes are the CO oxidation and the NO
reduction. Both of them take place on the surface
of platinum (Pt) and they present temporal
concentration oscillations and spatiotemporal
fractal patterns. For the understanding of the
mechanisms which create this complex behavior
analytical Mean Field methods with high order
non-linearities are developed together with
numerical simulations (Monte Carlo or Molecular
Dynamics) on various kinds of substrates, smooth,
rough, random and fractal (ANIMATION). We have
shown that the use of fractal substrates (such as
Sierpinski carpets and sponges) may change the
production rate in a process without changing
the experimental conditions (such as
temperature, pressure etc).
