NCDP who, what and why?

• Coalition of Dutch organisations that are
  responsible for long-term access to digital
  objects
• While large numbers of digital objects are being
  created, the Netherlands does not yet have a
  durable nationale infrastructure for the safe
  keeping of these data
• Until now, collaboration in digital preservation
  in the Netherlands was only organised informally
• One organisation cannot solve the problem by
  itself collaboration is essential

Start of the NCDP

• 2006 Data Archiving and Networked Services
  (DANS) and National Library of the Netherlands
  (KB) took the initiative to bring stakeholders
  together
• May 2007 Start-up meeting where eight
  organisations agreed to start the Coalition
• December 2007 agreement to set up a foundation
• January 2008 Bureau and coordinator will start
  the work of the Coalition
• 2008 Activities will be set up, open up for new
  (associate) members

Mission

• To safeguard permanent access to digital
  information in the Netherlands
• As a result of the coalitions activities, in
  five years time, the Netherlands will have a
  stable organizational and technical
  infrastructure in place, which guarantees
  long-term access to digital data that are of
  crucial importance to science, culture, society
  and business.

What will the NCDP do?

• Issue a study that will explore the current
  status of digital preservation in different
  sectors in the Netherlands
• Identify roles and resposibilities concerning
  digital preservation in the Netherlands
• Realise organisational, technical and financial
  changes to take on responsibilities
• Knowledge sharing
• Knowledge dissemination

National survey

• Explore current state of digital preservation in
  the Netherlands
• Four sectors government, cultural heritage,
  science and commercial sector
• Identify risks
• Lay the groundwork for an approach for setting up
  a durable national infrastructure
• First phase of the survey started, first results
  available in 2008

Knowledge sharing and dissemination

• Members of the NCDP share their knowledge and
  experiences with eachother as well as with others
• NCDP bureau will initiate activities
• Organise workshops and training
• Stimulate collaborative projects
• Disseminate information on issues and solutions
• Projectsideas database, handbook in Dutch, and
  many other things

International collaboration

• NCDP was inspired by the Digital Preservation
  Coalition in the UK
• First contacts set up with similar initiatives in
  other countries (UK, Germany, Denmark)
• Become a member of the Alliance for Permanent
  Access (as are other national coalitions)
• Set up contact with FP6 project Digital
  Preservation Europe (DPE)
• Be the Dutch liaison to other European projects
  (PLANETS, CASPAR)
