    traditions, values and culturally acceptable
    habits.
  • Learned behaviors, consciously or subconsciously
    performed in daily, natural situations.
  • Why do they do that?

Goals
  • To learn about and describe the appropriate
    practices of language usage and social
    interactions within the context of Japanese
    encounters through reading scenarios and
    selecting and reflecting upon various possible
    behaviors.
  • To be able to use experiences and personal
    background to assist in higher level thinking
    skills such as reasoning and rationalizing,
    reflecting and applying the focus behaviors.
  • To record your perceptions about language usage,
    culture and behaviors

  • When doing a cultural encounter entry,
  • Attempt to do the initial writing without any
    external resources
  • Write as much as you can in Japanese, but English
    is OK
  • Focus in on the topic provided and discuss freely
    or answer candidly
  • Try your best-there is no right or wrong
  • Write for the entire time allotted

  • In Japanese
  • Weather Statement
  • In Japanese
  • Title of the Encounter
  • Copy down the exact title.

    EACH answer-pros and cons with explanation
  • In English (Japanese-where possible)
  • Give specific, logical reasons for your opinion
  • Reference text, background, experience as needed
