  • Following a poor performance from the British
competitors in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, plans
were made for the future success of elite
athletes based on the soviet model of the
60s,70s 80s. During those years the soviet
countries identified talent at an early age and
provides specialist schools and institutes to
develop these performers into successful elite
sports men and women on the world stage.

Are there any negative aspect in pursuing
excellence?
  • By definition it is elitist with large amounts
of resources being directed at a few performers
at the expense of the foundation and
    participation levels.
  • Too much at stake encourages cheating drugs,
    diving in football, etc.
  • Physical and mental burn-out of performers due to
over training and demands of competition
