National Insurance Number
  • What is it?
  • Records National Insurance contributions
  • Controls claims to social security benefits
  • Everyone who works in UK pays if you earn over
    about 90 per week
  • Money can NOT be claimed back

Tax code
  • When you start work you will be given an
  • emergency tax code. You may be charged income
    tax at this time, but you will be reimbursed
    through your wages when your employer receives
    correct code.

Police (CRB) Checks
  • Some jobs require a police check, for example job
    that involve working with children or vulnerable

Contract
  • This is an agreement between an employer and a
    worker setting out the terms under which they
    will have a working relationship.
  • If you have a written contract and you want it
    checked, visit the Student Advice Centre.

Wages
  • Most employees have the right to receive an
    itemised pay
  • slip showing
  • how much you have earned (your gross wages)
  • any deductions (National Insurance and income
    tax)
  • If you are unsure, please check with the Student
    Union Advice Centre in the Student Union
  • Cash in hand is usually not legal

National minimum wage
  • From 1st October 2008 the national minimum wage
    will be
  • 18 21 4.77 per hour
  • 22 5.73 per hour
  • You may be entitled to more than this if your
    contract specifies a higher wage.
  • If your employer refuses to pay you, visit the
    Student Advice Centre ASAP
