Entropy in Ergodic Theory
Abstract Ergodic theory was originated by
Maxwell, Boltzmann, Gibbs and Poincare as a
statistical study of the long-term behaviour of
complex dynamical systems (e.g. the ideal gas,
the Solar system). The mathematical definitions
and the first theorems appeared much later and
are due to von Neumann, Birkhoff, Hopf and
Halmosh. From the mathematician's perspective,
ergodic theory is a study of measure preserving
ergodic transformations of the segment of the
reals 0,1 (one of the simplest examples is the
irrational rotation of a circle). In this
context, entropy is the numerical invariant
(under appropriate type of isomorphism) of such a
transformation. I will try to overview some basic
conceptions of ergodic theory with the emphasis
on entropy.
