  • To enhance communication and relations between
    U.S. and Chinese librarians
  • To encourage and promote collaboration and
    sharing of information

Project Activities
  • 3 programs at the Mortenson Center for
    International Library Programs, University of
    Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
  • Library Directors (June/July 2009)
  • Library Educators (January 2010)
  • Library Technology Managers (May 2010)
  • 6 continuing education programs in China
  • 2009 May, September, October
  • 2010 February, June, July
  • 3 UIUC IT teams to China
  • to explore Chinese web resources and to
    eventually establish a portal to be hosted at
    UIUC
  • to conduct a workshop for US librarians in June
    2010

Composition of the Teams
  • Each team will consist of 3-4 librarians, a team
    leader, and a PI or Co-PI
  • Librarians will be selected through the
    recruitment process
  • Members of the IMLS Think Globally, Act Globally
    Steering Committee will lead the teams

Workshop Topics
  • Laws, policies, and strategic plans of U.S.
    libraries
  • Library management and operational mechanism
  • Public library services
  • Library assessment and librarians professional
    development, promotion and evaluation system
  • Public relations activities and their values
  • Academic libraries, special libraries, library
    education, and professional organizations in the
    U.S.

Qualifications
  • An ALA-accredited MLS degree or its equivalent
    required
  • A minimum of three years of post MLS professional
    working experience in a field of library services
    in the U.S. preferred
  • Experience in presentation skills required
  • Experience with public services or public library
    experience preferred
  • CALA membership preferred CALA members will be
    given first priority for speaker positions

Responsibilities - 1
  • Responsible for preparing and delivering
    interactive workshop/lecture with quality
    PowerPoint presentations or other useful media in
    Chinese and English
  • Agree to post PowerPoint and other materials on
    the Project website
  • Must work with the team and follow the direction
    of the team leader
  • Must observe all schedules, comply with all
    travel policies and procedures of the University
    of Illinois and all travel guidelines of the
    funding agency (IMLS)

Responsibilities - 2
  • Must stay the entire duration of the workshop
    approximately 8-10 days
  • Must submit a report within one month after
    completing the training workshop
  • Must refer IMLS grant-related matters to the
    primary contact on the team either PI or Co-PI
    representing UIUC

  • Speakers will have their travels arranged by the
    University of Illinois and costs covered by the
    grant agreement
  • 1,000 honorarium
  • Opportunity to interact with Chinese colleagues

The Selection Process
  • Applications will be reviewed by the Chinese
    American Librarians Association (CALA)
    International Relations Committee which will make
    recommendations
  • IMLS Think Globally, Act Globally Steering
    Committee will make the final selections based on
    the recommendations
