Pre - school education Kindergarten
  • In our country there are Kindergartens (nursery
    schools) for children from the age of 3 to 6
    years.
  • This pre-school education is not compulsory

Primary school(primary level)
  • From the age of 6 to 15 (or 16) children attend
    primary schools. There are 2 degrees there. The
    first degree is from the first to the fifth class
  • During these five years children are being
    teached mainly how to read, write and do
    arithmetics
  • After these five years, more talented children
    can go to (8-year) grammar schools
  • After each 5 months the pupils are given reports
    with their marks (1-5) from all the subjects and
    also for their behaviour

Grammar school
  • Grammar schools prepare students to enter a
    university for advanced academic study
  • Some grammar schools provide general education,
    others have a specific focus
  • humanities education
  • modern languages (students are required to study
    at least three languages)
  • mathematical-scientific education
  • Grammar school takes 4 or 8 years and ends with
    leaving exams. Each candidate who passes his
    final exams receives a document that contains
    their grades and which formally enables them to
    go to a university

Leaving exams (maturita)
  • The exam consists of 4 subjects (Czech and one
    foreign language are compulsory, the other two
    subjects are chosen by students)
  • If you pass youll get a Leaving certificate
  • If you fail from one subject, you can still try
    in September
  • If you fail in more than one subjects, you can
    try next year

Secondary vocation school
  • completed after three to four years of study by a
    report on a final exam and a vocational
    certificate stating professional capability(in
    the area of crafts)
  • students usually dont continue in the classical
    education system and rather go to work in the
    selected branch
  • (technical, business-related, medical,
    social, administrative, artistic and cultural
    fields in particular)

An Apprentice training school(Technical school)
  • offers apprenticeship subjects
  • apprenticeship subjects prepare students for
    labour-oriented careers and are concluded with
    final exams
  • provide mostly employment-preparation skills for
    trained labor, such as welding, culinary arts and
    office management.

Post-secondary education (Tertiary education)
  • is the non-compulsory educational level,
    following the completion of a secondary school
  • it usually takes 2 years
  • together with a certificate, students are awarded
    the title of certified specialist (the
    abbreviation DiS. is added after a name)

University
  • Is available to all applicants with completed
    secondary education who successfully pass the
    entrance exam
  • The system of entrance exams is specified
    individually by each college, and serves for
    testing the knowledge and skills of applicants.

Degree programs
  • Bachelor's - Usually a three-year course of study
  • (Students can either leave their studies after
    these three years or they can continue into the
    master's program, where they can achieve a
    narrower specialization)
  • Master's 5 or 6-year program or 2-year
    programs following bachelor's studies
  • The program finishes with students taking
    required state leaving exams and defending their
    diploma thesis
  • Engineering - Relates to technical and economic
    fields
  • After students pass these types of university
    study, some continue in their specialization
    through doctoral programs
