Combining Sentences
  • I want you to know the answers to these
    questions
  • What are the ways you can combine two thoughts
    together?
  • Can I combine more than two thoughts in one
    sentence?
  • Whats the difference between a coordinating
    conjunction and subordinate conjunction?

3
Putting two sentences together
  • Coordinating conjunctions are
  • FANBOYS
  • (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So)
  • You use coordinating conjunctions to join
together two equal parts of a sentence two
nouns, two verbs, two phrases, or two clauses.

Subordinate Conjunctions
  • Subordinating conjunctions introduce dependent
(subordinate) clauses and join the dependent
clause to the independent or main clause in a
    sentence.
  • A dependent clause has a subject and verb, but
it depends on the independent clause for context
    and meaning.

Using Sub-O Conj
  • Subordinate clauses turn an independent clause to
    a dependent clause.
  • Independent I dissect frogs.
  • Add the subordinate conjunction When
  • Now its dependent (not a complete thought)
  • When I dissect frogs,

12
Combining with Sub-Os
  • When I dissect frogs, I get sick.
  • I get sick when I dissect frogs.
  • If you introduce the sentence with your sub-o,
then you must put a comma at the end of your
    dependent clause.
  • If you stick your sub-o conjunction in the
    middle, NO COMMA!

13
  • Brush your teeth before you go to bed.
  • Before you go to bed, brush your teeth.
  • I am mad because you ate all the pie.
  • Because you ate all the pie, I am mad.
  • When you go to the store, pick up milk.
  • Pick up milk when you go to the store.

More than 2 independent clauses (a.k.a. run-ons!)
  • I like to eat pizza.
  • I like Pizza Hut.
  • My favorite pizza is Pepperoni Lovers.
  • How can I combine these suckers? Remember, you
cannot use more than 2 independent clauses in a
    compound sentence!

15
Some possibilities
  • I like to eat Pizza, and I like Pizza Hut. My
    favorite pizza is Pepperoni Lovers.
  • I like to eat pizza because I like Pizza Hut, and
my favorite pizza is Pepperoni Lovers.
  • I like pizza and Pizza Hut, and my favorite pizza
    is Pepperoni Lovers.
