Introduction Satellite imagery provides a
means of extending our understanding of land
surface properties from site-specific studies to
larger regions. In addition, site-based
information can serve to validate remote sensing
products. However, acquiring, preparing, and
analyzing the time-series of remote sensing
products along with site-based data can be
computationally challenging. NASAs ORNL DAAC
and NCDC collaborated to develop a pilot tool
that allows ready access of land surface data
products from field observations, model output,
and remote sensing records for field stations in
North America. The tool is designed to access the
diverse data products from distributed sources,
using standard-based data exchange protocols such
as OPeNDAP (DAP) and W3C Web Service (SOAP).
  • Web Tool Features and Example Screenshots
  • Multiple biophysical parameters (LST, NDVI,
LAI, EVI), and will include Albedo, NPP etc.
  • Easy Site search and selection, Google Map
preview, links to site network web pages
  • Easy steps to choose site, variable, data
source, and time period of interest
  • Real-time time series visualization
  • Data subset downloadable in CSV format

Data Calls
  • Capabilities
  • Current Capabilities
  • Currently supported variables include Land
    Surface Temperature (LST), Normalized Difference
Vegetation Index (NDVI), Leaf Area Index (LAI),
Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI). Of these, LST
and NDVI data are from both site-based and
satellite-based products, while LAI and EVI are
    from satellite-based products
  • Point-based site selection, covering more than
    120 field locations from various
    research/operation networks
  • Obtain subsets (location, time span) from
    multiple data source
  • Time series visualization/comparison
  • Download specified time series in ASCII format
  • Future Development Efforts
  • Support other biogeochemical properties
    Reflectance, Albedo, Radiation, NPP, etc.
  • Areal-based data visualization/comparison,
aggregation / analysis tools, in collaboration
    with users/science team
  • Expand to other sensors (e.g., MISR) and other
    monitoring networks

Summary
  1. User selects temperature from multiple sensors
    for a site
  2. User selected period in 2006 (temporal
    subsetting)
  3. Time series visualization, with Zoom-in Tool
  • Facilitate the simultaneous access and
intercomparison of in situ, satellite, and
    modeling data
  • Acquire spatial / temporal subsets of the data
  • Help evaluate and validate satellite products and
    in-situ science research
  • Currently seeking feedback and input on tool
